Watched the newest season of Degrassi: Next Class and it was pretty damn good. At least, it had REALLY good moments.
Maya’s depression story line and how realistic (most of) it felt
Lola getting an abortion and then blatantly says that she feels guilty about not feeling guilty about it. Like that’s fucking amazing.
Rasha! My new favorite lesbian to ever attend Degrassi! A Muslim Syrian lesbian! It is so rare to see that in television! Props to Degrassi for that.
The gross comments about Muslims actually being addressed as the prejudice and bigotry that they are
The subtle callbacks to previous seasons for Degrassi fans who have been watching since before Netflix picked it up
And Esme? I basically did not like her one bit last season but she’s kind of grown on me by giving her more of a gray area to work with
Very good season. 4/5 stars for me

Oh man, I agree about Maya. That mental illness plot was A+! It spanned the whole season, rather than an episode or 2 that they'd done back before DNC, in the last Degrassi seasons. I can't identify with the gore, but I DO know several people who are obsessed with gore and also super suicidal and/or depressed. The biggest thing, for me, was the tying up lose ends, trying to make things right, and being suddenly happy when she decided to kill herself. It was honestly A fucking plus.
Yaaaasss!

In the most recent Degrassi season, what were your thoughts on the last episode, and the ending of said episode? The reason I'm asking, many people didn't like that they had to end the episode off with an OOC Tristan question about pizza, when Maya was in the hospital fighting for her life. I personally, didn't mind it, but I'm not putting all my thoughts into it, and I'm not a huge part of the fandom, so this could have influence.
DNC spoilers to follow!
Alright. Here’s the thing. People are going to hate on Tristan regardless of what he does. He could probably solve world hunger and he’d get hate. I understand that he’s done some problematic things, and those are inexcusable! But it doesn’t mean that he’s a bad person.
As for the final scenes of episode 10, that was a pretty dark episode in a pretty dark season. I think it says something that Tristan, Miles, and Zoe were even at the hospital considering they aren’t/haven’t been friends with Maya in years.
Tristan asking about pizza, in my opinion, wasn’t insensitive. At that point, there was nothing they could do except be sad. And Miles and Zoe spent a good portion of the season being sad. I also think it was Tristan somewhat trying to normalize and lighten the mood. He’s trying to show Miles (and Zoe) that he’s very much still there, even with his recovery. He’s trying to get their minds off of Maya (and Miles’s heavy statement) and just make them smile.
And it works.
They both laugh, and the season ends with the three of them leaving the hospital to get pizza. It was a spot of HOPE in an otherwise bleak time. Because even though things are different, not everything has to be. Hope is on the horizon, for all of them! Tristan is recovering. Maya is going to have friends to support her, get help, and be okay.
Tl;dr: no, I didn’t find the ending offensive or insensitive. I also think people give Tristan too much shit.
Also thank you for asking and for thinking I have any kind of influence. I’ve been wanting to talk about my feelings on this matter since I first saw people’s reactions. I love you!
