changing special interests is such a unique kind of pain that i dont think many people understand…
first of all, any big change in my life is very scary to me. so that kind of sets the groundwork for how i feel by default
but then theres the shift in perspective. special interests help me perceive the world around me, and changing that is really, really jarring. its like waking up one day and suddenly everything is the color blue
and then you have to deal with everything else that already came with being autistic and having a special interest on top of that. the anxiety of something new happening with it (for example a new episode of a show, if your interest is media), sitting for hours on end fixating on it without bathroom or eating breaks, worrying about annoying people when you bring it up constantly in conversations
its just…a lot. and i feel like most people dont really understand how overwhelming it can be
