Your next album is a cup of coffee.

What’s your favourite song of all time?

Ok, almost impossible to answer-what about your top 3 albums of all time?

Or even your top ten live shows you’ve experienced?

Now ask yourself the same question but replace song/album/gig with a cup of coffee.

Honestly do you remember the last time a cup of coffee was memorable enough to even warrant a list?

Let’s say its a Colombian Andean or a Italian expresso or simply something that got you up in the morning-you would struggle to make a list of those experiences.

Now that’s not to say that coffee and the fine barristers of the world are not great-we’ve all had entire days fuelled by the bean; but here’s the problem:

Somewhere along the line we started to compare music, songs, albums & shows to a cup of coffee.

It’s easy to see how we fell into this trap, we wanted people to buy our songs, invest in albums and come to shows so we compared it to an everyday item, something that everyone knows: a cup of coffee.

We’ve all said something like “This albums the price of a cup of coffee” “For only the price of a cup of coffee you can see x amount of bands”.

It came from a place of showing how easy it was to support an artist, band or venue.

In comparing the two we have lowered the intrinsic importance and artistic value of musicians.

Music is more than its sum parts, it is often the soundtrack to our lives to compare The Great Gig In The Sky to a mocha is how Jules would say “ain't the same fxxxxx' ballpark, it ain't the same league, it ain't even the same fxxxxx' sport.”

We need to stop the comparison and raise the value of our art.

There’s a reason they play songs at funerals and don’t serve coffee.
