What are your thoughts on KingTenna....I must know.....

hoooooo boy hehehehe.....

so. the honest truth is that despite how much ive campaigned for kingtenna on both of my blogs....... i didnt initially care for spade king much at all. like ok hes the generic corrupt bad guy at the end of the first chapter. so what. but as the game has progressed and the central themes are more pronounced... what ive come to realise is that king is most intriguing when you contrast him to the other chapter antagonists. And my god is this particularly evident after chapter 3.

King has a deep resentment of lightners. His kingdom has been abandoned by them for many years, and has chosen to let that hatred consume him and give him a new purpose. He is eager to protect the knight's dark fountain in order to disrupt the balance of light and dark in his people's favour.

Soon, this world shall be blanketed in darkness... And DARKNERS shall RULE it! Then, you may see what it is like to live in DESPAIR!

Now take queen. On a surface level she appears to share king's goal as an antagonist: Theyre rulers trying to follow in the footsteps of the knight, which involves creating and maintaining the dark fountains. theyre willing to misuse their power over their subjects to achieve this. But the thing is, they both have completely divergent interpretations of what the knight is trying to achieve by opening dark fountains! While king presumes the knight supports his agenda in which darkners shall rule the world, queen believes its actions serve the best interests of both darkners and lightners. Because unlike king, queen cares a lot about them and genuinely wants to make them happy!

[Ralsei] Queen, think of the Lightners! Aren't we supposed to make them happy? [Queen] Is That Not What I Am Doing?

The second ralsei actually informs her of the danger of creating the "neo dark fountains," she immediately withdraws her entire plan and becomes an ally of the heroes! Despite initially sharing a common goal with king, their true motives could hardly be more dissimilar. Queen cares deeply about lightners and tries to act in their best interests, even if for the majority of the chapter she is deeply misinformed about how to actually achieve this.

And then there's tenna. holy shit. tenna and king both share a similar situation: they're darkners who have been abandoned by lightners. They no longer serve their former 'purpose' to them, they've been left to gather dust. As mentioned already, king resents lightners for abandoning his kingdom. He is no longer concerned about acting out his 'purpose' to them, and in fact dismantling the idea of it being a darkner's 'purpose' to serve lightners defines his primary goal. Tenna, though?

I WONDER … IF THEY EVEN LIKE THE GAME …? I'M TRYING MY BEST TO MAKE IT FUN, BUT …

KRIS, OH, KRIS IF YOU COULD JUST SMILE … LAUGH … TELL ME I'M DOING SOMETHING RIGHT. PLEASE …

Tenna needs the affirmation of lightners. He's desperate for their attention and approval, he practically grovels at the feet of the party to convince them to stay. Without a lightner audience he has no direction, no purpose, he considers himself useless, irrelevant junk.

You get what im getting at here? Why tenna becoming kings court jester has such potential? King as the biggest deviation from the “it’s our purpose and duty as darkners to serve lightners” philosophy most central darkners share, coupled with Tenna as a darkner who struggles to find contentment not serving lightners to a destructive degree. The way their perspectives on darkner purpose and identity conflict so perfectly…! In fact, I think they could actually do a lot for each other in addressing the toxic aspects of these respective viewpoints.

Tenna defining his entire self worth by his relationship to lightners is not healthy. It’s not fair to himself and it’s definitely not fair to his fellow darkners who he has consistently mistreated while chasing after the lightners attention. Being around someone like king who is beyond comfortable rejecting this notion altogether… it could be good for him (maybe not the all-consuming bitterness part, but still!). Why is the company of lightners more valuable to him than that of his fellow darkner? Does it actually have to be that way? Is holding onto the exact mindset that made him so unstable when the dreemurrs abandoned him a good thing for himself moving forward in this new era of his life?

On kings end… There’s an irony to his motivation to empower darkners. He doesn’t actually show any consideration towards the wishes of other darkners in his kingdom, his rule oppressed them rather than liberating them. He emotionally neglects and abuses his own son all while trying to instil these beliefs in him. Ironically, his idol is practically confirmed to be a lightner (or at least used to be one?), and a lightner who has no qualms killing/injuring darkners at that! Oh and hey you know who can attest to that from personal experience?

King has never even met the knight! He assumes they support his principles despite knowing the bare minimum about them and its goals. But tenna has been contacted by the knight directly (or at the very least their associate, kris) and knows that he was ultimately disposable to them. That could also be a wake up call on kings end. What does he actually stand for if he’s constantly willing to align himself to the harm to the group he’s supposedly trying to give power to?

… all this being said, I do think this would take a while to unfold. Right now, the only interaction theyve had is tenna finding contentment in being humiliated in front of king because if this is what it takes to be praised and watched so be it, which does just kind of enable both of their toxic habits I just spoke of lol. I do like this angle too, them being toxic and gross together eternally is something I enjoy. But man. If they actually talked to each other a little more, what could become of it?

Ok that’s the kingtenna spiel. Message to all tenna shippers please talk about them more alongside your spamtennas and mettatennas and such thank you
