"The Silent Voice", 1898 by Gerald Moira
The piece illustrates a stanza from The Two Voices, a poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Tennyson wrote the poem, titled "Thoughts of a Suicide" in manuscript, after the death of his friend Arthur Henry Hallam in1833. The poem was autobiographical.
-Thereto the silent voice replied;
"Self-blinded are you by your pride:
Look up thro' night: the world is wide.
- A contemporary critic described the painting as follows: "In the blue moonlight, close about the dazed and doleful figure of a seated girl, a silent voice, or half perceived figure, whispers a coming comfort."

Chanel was never tried for her crimes as a collaborator. She used her connections, information, and money to pay off the right people and cover her tracks.
She was briefly arrested and questioned by a French judge, but basically got off scott-free and allegedly told her family that she was freed by Winston Churchill.

[…] people managed to surround themselves with an impervious world in which their lives had meaning, but there was always a little cheating at the bottom of it all. If one looked carefully, without trying to deceive oneself, one would find beneath all these imposing appearances nothing but a sprinkling of small, futile impressions—the yellow light on the bar-top, the taste of rotten medlars at the bottom of the glass of marc. It could not be caught in words: it had to be borne in silence and then it disappeared without leaving any trace, and something else, equally elusive, arose in its place. Nothing but sand and water, and it was folly to try to build anything on it. Even death did not deserve all the fuss that was made over it. Of course it was terrifying, but only because one couldn’t imagine how one would feel.

A bit of a Snow White redesign to go with my earlier Rapunzel piece. Her clothes were inspired by 16th century Germany, with a bit of a traditional fairytale-y twist thrown in.

You understand, the titles, the… dukedom. They’re not the job. She is the job. She is the essence of your duty. Loving her. Protecting her. Of course, you’ll miss your career. But doing this for her, doing this for me… there may be no greater act of patriotism. Or love.
