Dear Rebecca,
Jeff Redacted passed on your name to me indicating you are interested in our Docent training. We are always looking for new members of our group and hope you can join us.
Jeff pretty well covered our program in his e-mail to you except he got the starting date wrong. Starting date is Tuesday, 6 January, 2009.  All you will need to do to get started is to show up at the starting class and we can get you all signed up.
I am enclosing the training schedule, Reference materials for classes and our general requirements for becoming a Docent.
If you have any questions let me know.  I think you will find the Docents a friendly group with all kinds of experience and knowledge of Maritime history and are willing to share that with others. They also have a lot of sea stories!!
I hope you can join us and hope to see you in the near future.
Regards,
Joe Redacted

Docent Qualification Requirements
Qualification as a Docent requires the following:
1.      Ongoing Museum membership.
2.   Purchase of and familiarization with the current Docent Manual
3.   Completion of Docent Training classes.
4.   Completion of the Docent Examination.
5.   Completion of three "Walk Abouts".  Walk Abouts consist of accompanying and observing a qualified Docent on a Museum tour or Deck Duty on several vessels.
The Walk Abouts should be conducted with 3 different qualified docents.
6.   Successful completion of a Check Out tour (CO) accompanied by a member of the Docent Coordinating Committee or someone designated by them. During the tour the docent trainee should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the history and point out significant features of all the ships, as well as answer questions of the qualifying docent.
Upon completion of the above requirements the trainee will receive his/her Docent badge and is qualified to conduct Museum tours and other docent functions. Docents are expected to purchase the blue Docent polo shirts and jackets that are to be worn, with the docent badge and appropriate slacks when on any duty representing the museum.  Knee length shorts are authorized for summer wear.  No short-shorts!
Once qualified, Docents are expected to serve a minimum of one shift (4 to 6 hours) of Deck Duty or the equivalent time conducting tours, per week.  Other opportunities are Berkeley engine room duty, Californian sails and Pilot tour monitor/narrator.  The latter duties will require some additional training.
Other opportunities exist in helping museum staff with administrative work, assisting with other museum events, assistance in the library or cleaning and maintaining or assisting in the installation of new exhibits or displays.
If you are looking for something to do, speak up and someone will find a job for you.
