What is the Social Stigma associated with the Brass Knuckles?
Brass knuckle, also known as knuckle dusters have been with us for a long time. Historical analysis indicates that the earliest versions of the brass knuckles might have been around us since the era of the heroic gladiators. Over the decades, the brass knuckle has been used as effective fighting tools for the enhancement of the power of the punching fist. An amazing fact which is associated with the brass knuckle is that these are very simple with respect to their design; additionally, no ammunition is required for the "fighting mechanism" of the brass knuckles. In fact, the knuckle dusters are made of one-piece metal; nonetheless, these can wreak havoc. Therefore, the brass knuckles have been banned in many states and countries around the world.
The Glorious History of the Brass Knuckle
I already mentioned that brass knuckles have been with us since a long time; the Spartans and gladiators were the first ones to make effective use of the primary version of the brass knuckle which was also known as the "caestus" at that time. The ‘caestus' or ‘cestus' was the first version of a ‘battle glove' made of leather layers which were stuffed with bits and pieces of metal and rocks; these leather strips were wrapped around the hand by the wielder and used as a boosting tool for their punching power. Fast forward decades and we can see that even soldiers used brass knuckle during the WWI and WWI as well as the Civil war. Rumors have it that if soldiers couldn't get their hands on a proper set of brass knuckles they managed to craft their own knuckle dusters while using wood or melting their bullets into the shape of brass knuckles.
The effectiveness of the brass knuckles can be recognized from the fact that the government issued brass knuckle knives, also known as trench knives to their soldiers during WWII. The trench knife was a sharp knife with knuckle duster built into their handles. The trench knives were quite popular combat tool while fighting against the enemy within the trenches where the long-barreled rifles couldn't be used effectively. Apart from the real brass knuckles knife (trench knife), other knife versions were used as well, such as the Bowie knife; however, none of the other knives has gained worldwide popularity and recognition as the brass knuckle.
Let's talk about the social stigma associated with the brass knuckles. One major reason for the social stigma attached to the use of real brass knuckles is that for a long time the brass knuckles were most widely used by the gang members of the mafia. I am specifically referring to the "New York Gang" which was at their prime time during the 1850s. Numerous people were beaten murdered with the help of weapons and guns; most noticeably, with the brass knuckle. Subsequently, the government was forced to put a ban on the use, ownership, even selling and transporting of the brass knuckles as well as the stiletto knives which were equally popular amongst the gangsters.
Today we can see that knuckle duster are still popular around the globe. Now, the brass knuckles exist in a variety of forms, such as the brass knuckle paperweight and brass knuckles belt buckle. In addition, the brass knuckles are associated with making a solid fashion stamen as well; for instance, you can see many rappers from the music industry flashing their brass knuckles necklaces and other jewelry items in their various music videos. Before you get your set of knuckle dusters, we recommend checking in with your local laws about the legality of owning and carrying brass knuckles.
