Ravenclaw: Hey, I need some advice.
Slytherin: And you came to me??
Ravenclaw: Yes.
Slytherin: Terrible choice, really.
Ravenclaw: Look, if I wanted to fix my problems I wouldn't be here. Now come on and help me do the wrong thing.

there are some things you can’t share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them. (insp)

Grindelwald hesitating
As Graves/Colin Farrell in the Wand Permit Office (around 2:26-2:28):
ABERNATHY: “Afternoon, Mr. Graves, sir.”
GRAVES: “Afternoon, A- Abernathy.”
Possibilities!!
1. Grindelwald has no trouble keeping track of all the people, places and names Graves knows, but because he is so curious about Tina, he needs this little pause to refocus, to get out of his head.
2. Abernathy sounds similar to Aberforth and Albus (the Ab part)… so if he thinks about Albus a lot, this could’ve been a Freudian slip. (#wishful thinking)
What interests me the most here is whether Colin Farrell came up with the idea on a whim or whether Yates or someone else specifically instructed him to hesitate. Because we then see Johnny Depp do it too.
Grindelwald/Johnny Depp during his speech at Père-Lachaise (around 2:17-2:30)
GRINDELWALD: “Oh, what a world we would make for all of humanity. We who live for freedom, for truth… a-and for love.”
In the screenplay, Grindelwald meets Queenie’s eyes before saying “and for love”, so…
1. At Grindelwald’s hideout, he let Queenie, the legilimens, see that he genuinely is interested in fighting for the freedom of love (without revealing Albus’s identity and probably also without revealing that he’s into men lbr). So he’s trying to get into the mind frame of the yearning he mentally showed Queenie, which causes the brief hesitation in his speech. He’s multitasking, trying to show enough but not too much while still maintaining his speech.
2. Unlike his time as Graves, he isn’t looking for a word he is trying to remember. He’s distracted because what he’s about to say makes him think of Albus and the love between them. Perhaps there’s even a chance he’s quoting Albus’s exact words here?
3. Since Grindelwald is an occlumens, it’s hard to say if Queenie can read his thoughts if he drops his focus. Since he willingly took her with him to Nurmengard, I don’t think he thinks she can do that. Nevertheless, if he got distracted by thoughts of Albus here, he could’ve momentarily worried she could, which is why there’s a pause as he reframes his thoughts, just in case.
Then there’s this:
Grindelwald at Nurmengard (around 2:05 - 2:17)
GRINDELWALD: “You have suffered the most heinous of betrayals. It was purposely bestowed upon you, by your own blood - your own flesh and blood.”
This isn’t as much hesitation as it’s a correction on some type of sneaky word play he’s doing. It’s in the screenplay as well. Seems to me that blood is emphasized as a clue to the audience. We already have a blood pact in the background to consider. I won’t get into the multitude of Aurelius theories but there’s some type of link here.

I don’t know exactly how the blue fire protection circle works and whether it distinguishes between “people who are on my side” and “people who truly love me,” but if it’s the latter, W H A T I F Gellert conjures it during the final duel with Albus because he fully believes that Albus hates him and he’s spitefully making a point but then Albus is able to walk through it.
