People who get plenty of omega-3 fatty acids in their diets may have lowered odds of developing type 2 diabetes, two new reports suggest. In one study, of more than 3,000 older U.S. adults, researchers found that those with the highest blood levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) – two omega-3s found in fatty fish – were about one-third less likely to develop diabetes over the next decade than their counterparts with the lowest levels.

I was diagnosed with type two diabetes when I was 12, I take insulin injections but I feel like I don’t deserve it because I’m not type one. I sometimes feel like people judge me for being type two, my mum also has type two after having gestational diabetes and also my grandmother got diabetes. I’m not overweight or inactive. When people say things like “type two diabetes is caused by eating two much sugar” or “having a lazy lifestyle” is annoys me, because not everyone is the same.

Difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes:
Type 2 diabetes, often brought on by obesity or poor nutrition, involves a breakdown in the body’s ability to process the insulin it makes. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks itself and destroys its insulin-making cells. There is no behavior that “causes” it; doctors believe it is a genetic condition often triggered by an environmental stress, such as a virus. Those who suffer from type 1 are completely insulin dependent, and there is nothing that can be done to change that.

When ever I drop my pump, I like to yell “Ohh No! I dropped my pancreas!!” Just to make people stop and say “what?”

Researchers estimate that 90 percent of type 2 diabetes cases could be prevented through a combination of a healthy diet and an active lifestyle.

Type 2 Diabetes.
The moment I heard those words from the doctor, I felt defeated. Devastated and depressed over the whole thing. And none of my family helped me feel any better. They shrugged it off and told me to accept and adjust. It didn’t help me feel any better. It made me feel worse everytime they told me to get a snack, go get soda, only to say “Sorry, I forgot” It hurt me so. I wanted to sleep my life away and accept that things will never be better for me. I cried two whole days. On my days off, I cried. And the next day, I was at work, trying to handle what I felt.
I was angry. Not any anyone in general, but at myself. Because I did this to me. I didn’t moderate what I eat. I was 280 pounds at the start of the flipping year. That picture on the left? That was from a convention I went to back in 2014. I ate whatever the hell I want, I did whatever I wanted. And look where it got me.
So instead of accepting it, I fought it. I’m still fighting it. Day three of being diabetic, I changed my diet drastically. I dropped all of my sugar intake. Soda? Gone. Candy? No more. The real fight was the pasta and rice. Instead, I made most of my sugar-intake meals sugar free. I removed most of my carbs, my starch. Unlike my family who cares less about their diet and life, I decided to turn down a different path.
I hated the fact that I’m diabetic. I loathed the idea and rejected the concept. But, it didn’t stop me from ignoring it like it didn’t exist. I didn’t accept, but I followed the rules.
I started exercising more by no longer taking the elevator, walking up stairs. I walked around the complex. Second week, I started adding more exercises. Jumping jacks. Situps. A bit of Yoga. Anything to help work my heart up.
September, I weighed around 270 roughly.
November, I’m now around 240. Two-Fourty. I’m astonished.
It’s almost December, I’m now able to accept that I am diabetic. I don’t like it, but I’m accepting the fact that I’m diagnosed with it. But now, I’m considerably less tired. I’m more active. I feel less defeated and more accomplished about what I’m wanting to do with my life. This is me now on the right. I’ve lost thirty pounds in two months.
This is coming from someone that was recently diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes: It’s possible. It’s possible to make a difference, to take what you know and use it to change yourself. I’m an example of it. My reason to get in shape was not because of looking thinner, but to try and reverse an illness. I’m doing it because of my health.
Please, let me be that motivation for you to make a difference. Don’t let diabetes be permanent to you. Make the chance, take that first step. Even if it’s just walking up the stairs or around the complex. Even five jumping jacks a day. Even if you don’t go to the gym. You can do it. You just need to take that first step. Listen to music, use something to help motivate you. To drive you forward to accomplish the impossible.
Please, those who have diabetes you have to keep trying. Don’t find it moot. Don’t find it silly or stupid. Don’t find it pointless. Your health is important. Not to me, a nameless person, but to yourself.
Use these words to push yourself to the limits. You can do it and I believe in you.

I think one of the most emotionally and mentally scarring things to ever happen to me was when I was told by someone that they were head over heels for me, but they didn’t want to date me because I am a diabetic.
As though this disease, this awful, AWFUL disease hasn’t taken enough from me already, someone I considered a very close friend had the audacity to tell me that he wouldn’t be with me because of something I have no control over.
I’ve felt sorry for myself about this disease, sure. I’ve felt bad for my parents because of how much they have to pay for me, but before then, I had never felt like I would be a burden on my significant other because of diabetes. I should not be made to feel like I should be loved in SPITE of my diabetes.
Anyone who thinks they have the right to lower someone else because of a chronic illness, take a step back, really look at yourself, and get off your damn high horse.

Why drug treatment should NOT be the treatment of choice for chronic illnesses
To understand how chronic diseases work we have to talk about a group of enzymes called kinases. There are about 540 different enzymes in this group. They take messages from OUTSIDE the cells, translate them, and then re-deliver the message to the organelles INSIDE the cells. You can imagine them being postmen translating messages from french into german (or something like that). Once the cell receives the information, it will act upon it and change the function of the cell.
Now lets look at a complex chronic disease like Type 2 Diabetes. This disease is not as simple as just looking at glucose and insulin. There are a lot of kinases involved in this disease, including glycogen synthase kinase 3, insulin receptor substrate kinase 1, phosphoinositol kinase gamma and delta, spleen tyrosine kinase, etc. This is not to confuse you, but to show you how complex and involved diseases really are. These kinases will go on to affect the heart, eyes, blood vessels, nerves, brain, kidneys, liver, fat cells, and muscle, thus explaining all the other signs and symptoms of diabetes.
Now up to this point, there are no ONE drug that can influence ALL of these kinases. As explained by the DBPRCT blog, each drug gets tested for one mode of action. That is why someone suffering from Type 2 Diabetes is prescribed multiple pharmaceuticals including statins, betablockers, anti-inflammatories, insulin-stimulating and sensitizing meds, and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors.
I don’t know about you, but this doesn’t seem like a solution to me. People in the pharamceutical industry predict that the development of new kinase-inhibitor drugs will be a multibillion dollar business in the next 10 years. Don’t know if I’m very excited about that either. Why do we need these if we already know that lifestyle factors like diet, exercise and stress-reduction can do this already?
