Castle Hill - Ruggles, Ohio
Built in 1878 Charles Crittenden began construction of Castle Hill March 13, 1878, with a detailed "article of agreement" with builder David Myers, Wayne County. The pact used the home of John Flukes as a guideline. It specified such materials as "the best Vermont slate" for the roof, certain styles of flues, plaster and woodworking, brass fixtures, porcelain doorknobs and indoor shutters at every window. A central feature of the house is the mansard roofed tower which rises above the northeast corner over the main entrance. There is an unusual amount of carved wood ornamentation around the windows and the bracketed cornices. The 15-room house with its 10-foot ceilings was built for $2,700. The tower pediments and decks on the roof were added in another agreement in August of that same year, at an additional cost of $425. The structure, highlighted by an open stairway that makes one complete spiral from the ground floor to the top of the tower, was finished in 1880. The house sits upon a 660-acre farm originally owned by Nezer Sutherland who is buried in a small family cemetery on the grounds.

Coronavirus Home Chronicles Day 1,826 (Five Years)
Five years ago I was holding the hand of my three year old, watching the news and thinking about the state of the world. I'm still doing that five years later, but now she is 8, I listen to the news via podcasts, and am still thinking about the state of the world.

Five years ago my 8 year old became an independently active kid in the middle of a chaotic haze, riding around and loving a world that was in serious pain. He's still active and independent and 13. He's navigating his own chaotic internal world in the throws of hormones and modern catchphrases like sigma, bruh, bet, aura, and rizz.

Five years ago we were in the middle of listing our house for sale, hoping for a move that would give us a little more room. We ended up staying in this house and settled in the comfort of our space. It was a good move. Now we are in the midst of another good move, to a bigger space with more room to fill with memories.

Five years ago we found joy in bubbles, bike rides, the everyday ordinary life. Things around outside of homestead were not as ideal. Today, I try to recognize the everyday and ordinary and embrace it. Hold it. Give it thanks.

Five years ago I made food that felt comforting. Nothing has changed, except getting a new dishwasher in the meantime ;)

A lot of things happen in five years, but a lot of things stay the same. At times it's hard to comprehend how time works, and other times it's easy to forget that it exists. How ever you spend your time, I hope it's filled with big moments, little dreams, and those you care most about. Keep moving, do good stuff!

Be well and thrive.
