And here it is! The end of the second issue of The Prop Dept! I feel like I really found the voice of the comic both in tone, dialogue, and art style this issue. That said if you’ve never made a comic, just know, word balloons are hard, that’s why it’s its own career. Letters have a. hard job and I don’t think they get enough credit outside of comics. So I’ll just list a few of my favorites here.

The jist of my idea when doing the lettering on this page was, make them the focus. There are other things going on but this had really been an issue about them just talking and trying to find out who they are and where they stand in relation to this world they’ve been introduced to. I let them just sit and talk about it in the diner and this is where you just let them relax after a hard fought battle. A calm before the storm almost. Also I’m trying as much as possible with any speech to build that characters both as individuals and as friends. hace them make jokes and banter. Play off of each other like real people do.

Whew just made it. One of the things that I love most as a storyteller is writing the human moments that grew the characters as people and friends. Panel 7 I think is a pretty good example of just allowing the characters to speak for themselves and build them as individuals as well as establish their interpersonal relationships and dynamics

So I really do love splash pages. The thing is because they’re single panel so that one panel has to be interesting. “Still Movement” is really the main thing I keep in mind when doing splash page.

You see this a lot in anime. See DBZ Powerup below. The thing is this is a still comic page so I have to supplement actual movement for all the detail and wisps of energy along with hopefully a strong focal point and light effects. These realy help but you have to be careful they’ll overwhelm the whole image really quick.

Double spreads are hard! I’m trying to figure out how best to create flow in these action spreads where I don’t like to create straight frames in action/fight scenes but also trying to have the reading order of panels not get too confusing.
