A Hare in the Forest by Hans Hoffmann (c. 1585).
This is the story of the witch and the Easington Hare, and it's set in Easington in County Durham, England.
Once there was a group of men from Castle Eden in Durham who loved coursing, but one year there was a strange hare who would always distract their greyhounds. Every time they went out, the hare would appear and, rather than chase other hares and rabbits, the greyhounds would without fail chase after that one. They never caught it, and the men would often have to spend hours seeking their lost dogs.
They decided one day that the hare must be caught by any means necessary, but no matter how they tried the hare always evaded them. They decided they would visit the old man of the village, who, it was said, knew more about the ways of the animals than anyone in the county. He suggested using a bloodhound instead, a black bloodhound. That, however, was no good either, and the hare easily outran it, but, as the men were beginning to despair, the hare ran out of the woods and the men gave chase again, thinking it would be easier to catch.
It wasn't, of course. The hare led them to Easington, straight over the village green, and towards a cottage. The bloodhound, for a moment, got a hold of the hare's leg, but it freed itself and ran straight into a cottage. The men piled in after it, however once they were in the cottage they saw to their shock that there was no hare. It had vanished, and in its place was an old woman bandaging her leg. They realised she was a witch, and it was she who was the hare that distracted the dogs from coursing.
