Oh yes I liked this a lot. You could tell Jolene was hurt when she could see Adam’s family beginning to repair themselves because from her experience, there was no possibility (even when she meets Adam she immediately assumes that his parents had a terrible relationship). They definitely were able to learn a lot just by talking and observing the other’s family
How do you think Adam and Jolene complemented each other?

A little late to this but I thought it was so-so! The characters didn’t really grab me and I felt annoyed at them most of the time, but I appreciated their character development at the end of the novel
Hey hey y’all what are your thoughts on Every Other Weekend ??
#I don’t know if I’m growing too old for YA or if I just didn’t vibe with this book in particular#both characters striked me as particularly angsty 😅#to be fair they were going through a LOT

In Taylor Swift’s “epiphany,” (folklore, 2020) she sings, “keep your helmet, keep your life son / just a flesh wound, here’s your rifle.” Most listeners have understood these lines to be the preliminary subject—a soldier serving in wwii—which is later compared to the trauma experienced by nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. But the lines also smartly characterize the toxic capitalistic culture in America, as well as many of its citizens desire to downplay the severity of the pandemic. The line “just a flesh wound,” can easily be compared to phrases such as “it’s just like the flu/cold” or “it only affects the elderly”. It also describes the work culture that pushes profit over the health of its people—both mental and physical—in an attempt to “return to normal”. Additionally, like soldiers or nurses, citizens have repeatedly been asked to take on “personal responsibility” of minimizing sickness, but few systemic resolutions have been set in place, making even individual efforts nearly impossible and exacerbating trauma in an already divisive country. In this essay I will . . .

"The irony here, of course, is that the world saved its righteous anger until 10 years too late. When [Taylor] Swift was a young girl suddenly thrust into the biggest spotlight in the world, nobody passed judgment on the revolving door of men twice her age who lined up to claim her like a trophy. Instead, she was a slut, a serial dater, a crazy bitch — and when her dating life was the butt of a universal cultural joke, nobody even considered that she could be a victim. Instead, blonde, icy-eyed Swift (ripe for the projection from insecure men and girls who were unpopular in high school) was made out to be the Jezebelian villain everyone wanted her to be."
