I see what you're saying but I think that "favorite movie" is a poor indicator of one's actual tastes and realm of knowledge. Alien would probably take my top spot, not particularly obscure, even though I've probably seen thousands of movies in my life, it's one that I saw at a young age and informed my tastes. I think it's likely that many people's favorite movies are going to be ones that are linked strongly with nostalgia and ones that opened the door to the bigger world of film. If that's the case it's hardly surprising for more mainstream fair like, let's say, Pulp Fiction, to be common picks. Don't judge, but if you have to, at least don't judge by "favorite movie."

in my screenwriting class last week we went around the room and talked about our favorite movies and why and literally 3 different people said pulp fiction…. not to be pretentious but like…. watch more movies
