How to: CLIENT CONSULTATION
How to: Client Consultation:
A Consultation is the most important part of the salon visit. This allows you to better understand your clients hair goals or concerns and also make your client feel comfortable that you have an understanding of what they want.
Here is usually how my consults will go:
1. I always introduce myself 1st.
 - “ Hi my name is D’Anna and I’m going to be doing your hair today”
- If I’m not ready for my client or I’m running behind I will always acknowledge my client with a smile or nod and let them know how approx. how long I will be.
2. Always ask what they are thinking about doing with their hair.
 - I often hear other stylists in the salon just walk up to their clients and say “so were doing the usual?” I feel as though a good hairdresser should always be looking for ways to change it up slightly.
- Also just assuming they want to “do the usual” may stray them away from wanting to change their look.
- you can always put your advice in as well. Especially if you feel the look they are going for really wont suit them well. 3. Find out their everyday maintenance.
- If a client has very curly hair and wants to cut their hair short but doesn’t ever blow dry or style their hair maybe show other options that would be less maintenance for them and explain why it wouldn't be the best style.
4. Always give realistic expectations.
 - I always under sell myself when doing a color application especially if I have a new client in my chair. You don’t know how your clients hair will lift. Every stylist I know has experienced the client that comes in with 10 years of box dyed hair and wants to be platinum.  Let them know from the beginning it may take more then one visit to achieve their goal so they will not leave disappointed 5. Build an understanding with your client.
 - Questions are the best tool to help you understand your clients wants. being able to listen and absorb the information your client gives you will make the final result all that much better.
- Always repeat back to your client everything you have went over to assure them you have listened and know what they want.
-ALWAYS touch your clients hair during the consult. Analyze their hair type & the current condition their hair is in.
The consultation doesn’t end with your clients 1st visit. Every time your client sits in your chair you should ensure that you are constantly meeting your clients wants and needs, being able to up sellll your self with additional services or products while still most importantly building trust and loyalty with your client.

Make Your Passion Your Career!
Being a hair dresser can be so rewarding. When your passion becomes your job you start to feel differently about “work”. it’s such a great feeling when you show your client the final result and they are smiling from ear to ear :)
I always say… “I do it for the outcome not for the income.”

Taking the NYS Cosmetology Exam??
Tumblr media
So for all the cosmetology students who are going to be taking the exam soon, here are a few things you can expect!
When i walked into the exam I brought with me my: -admission card (which got mailed to me when I filled out my application) -Photo id ( I brought my divers licences) -$15 dollar check made out to the department of state.  (I believe you can pay credit card as well).
I filled out a form that just asked for my name, address & signature. I got finger printed. They handed me back my application and took a seat & got ready for my test!
- 21/2 hour test limit - 100 multiple choice - done on a scan tron
Now.. The test was pretty straight forward, practice you milady's test book and you will pass no problem.  REMEMBER!!!!! when you put an answer on a gut feeling, keep it and don't change it! I cant tell you how much I kicked my self when I got home & checked my answer to find out I got it wrong because I doubted my gut feeling.
TO CHECK TEST DATES GO TO: http://www.dos.ny.gov/licensing/exams/July-December2013/cosmet.html
GOOD LUCK MY FUTURE COSMO GIRLS!

Get The Most Out Of Your Blow Out!
Everyone loves to walk out of the salon with a fresh blow out! But the problem is how do keep that fresh, "walk out of the salon" look days after?
- Spray your roots with dry shampoo before your hair starts producing oils. - Protect your hair from moisture. (rain/humidity) - Touch up your Blow out in the morning with a blowdryer & round brush. - Sleep on a satin pillow case - Wrap your hair at night PRODUCT Recommendation: Oscar Blandi Pronto Invisible Dry Shampoo Spray ($25): The cream of the crop! This little can does amazing things and smells great.

Video
vimeo
Just wanted to share the inspiration.
So I was just browsing around the internet and i stumbled upon this beautiful most inspirational video made by this woman Joy LaMay who was a winner in the Vidal Sassoon Scholarship program.
If i could put my words together that beautifully that's exactly how i feel about the cosmetology industry.
"I believe that you have to continually seek out opportunities to grow, because hair not art that just sits around... it moves. It walk around, dances and talks with people. Hair is one accessory we cannot take off."

There Is NOTHING like the Beauty Business!
The cosmetology industry just keep getting bigger and better! There is so many opportunities that the field offers such as, flexibility, creativity, job security, financial independence... which is why I'm starting to realize a lot of people are becoming interested in the field. I mean believe it or not... we as cosmetologist have a large responsibility on our hands....We beautify the world!
There is so many things you can do within the industry: -Opening you own salon/spa -Styling Hair -Working with TV  -Travelling artist/hair designer -Personal designer and so on.... I personally have sought out a lot aspects of the industry and i realized that there is still so much more that I am able to do. This industry will never die. Woman and men are always going to need to get their hair cut. People aren't going to be able to turn to a computer to get their hair cut. Its that one luxury where no matter how bad the economy gets, people will still find the money for their personal needs.
So for any of you girls who are thinking about the cosmetology industry but just aren't sure, just remember to do what makes you happy!

MYTH BUSTED - HELPFUL TIP.
Tweezing Gray Hairs.
You Know the old saying, for every grey hair you pluck, two will grow back?! Well that is definitely not the case.
I know grey hairs can be stubborn but I would recommend just simply trimming the grey hair rather that plucking them. Plucking hair over time can cause damage to the hair follicle resulting in hair loss in that spot. You may not like the grey hair their now but you may need that hair in the future!
-Happy tweezing!

My Favorite Shears... For Cheap!
Tumblr media
Fromm Swirl Shear: My Favorite Pair of shears are found at Sally's Beauty Supply. I bought these shears while in cosmetology school and 4 years later I am on my second pair and couldn't see my self using another short pair of shears. They are extreemly sharp and the sharpness lasts quit a while.
I get so many compliments on them from fellow stylists and even my clients! They can be bought for $56 with your sally's card!

The BEST Part of the Salon Visit!
Tumblr media
Everyone woman would tell you that their favorite part of their salon visit would a great shampoo. Who doesn’t love getting a little spoiled with a great smelling shampoo and a luxurious head massage every now and then??
Now Although this can be the most relaxing/pleasurable part of the clients visit it can also turn out to be the most uncomfortable part for your clients as well.
So… to make sure that you make the shampooing process a great experience for your client; Here are some helpful tips, procedures and products that will help set a great introduction to the type of service they can experience during their visit with you. FOCUS ON: Retail A lot of stylists I know view the shampoo as “down time” and use it to talk about what they did and gossip. Its Important to know that your time is valuable and can be better spent by beginning to establish your professional relationship  with your client. While shampooing you can give your client information about what you are doing and why. Let the client know what shampoo your are using and why you selected it for their hair. Emphasize the products benefits, because you can potentially be selling your product right in the shampoo chair.
5 Ways to Make a Good Shampoo Great: 1. Always ask the client how they like the water cool/warm/hot before you begin. Once the water is on ask the client if the water is okay, if not adjust the water accordingly.
2. It is easy to miss the nape of the neck during a shampoo.and/or rinsing. This is when the shampoo experience can get uncomfortable. Always be careful when reaching the nape and be sure to check this area before escorting the client back to the station. Always be sure to change the towel that is draped around the neck in case of it getting wet.
3. Always massage your clients scalp according to their preference. Some clients have a sensitive scalp and what a soft massage where others like a firm massage. Always find out the preference before the shampoo.
4. Offer a cool rinse to your client. Your can explain the many benefits it has for the hair eg. closes cuticle, natural shine. If client rejects do not insist.. not many people like cool water.
5.When blotting the hair after the shampoo be careful to not blot the hairline. You may remove the clients makeup which may make her uncomfortable throughout the rest of their visit.
TIP: TO RELIEVE THE INITIAL SHOCK OF COLD SHAMPOO, HOLD THE SHAMPOO IN YOUR WARM HAND FOR SEVERAL SECONDS BEFORE APPLYING.
Scalp Massage Tips: 1. Sliding Movement; Place  your fingertips on each side of the clients head, slide your fingers firmly upwards spreading your fingertips until they meet. (4times)
2. Forehead Movement; Hold the back of the clients head with your left hand. place your stretched thumb and the fingers of your right hand on the clients forehead. move your hands slowly and firmly upward to 1 inch pack the hairline (4times)
3. Scalp Movement; Place the palms of your hands firmly against the clients scalp. Lift the scalp in a rotary movement, first with your hands placed about her ears, and second with your hands placed at the front and back of her head.

About Me:
Hey Everyone,
My Name is D’Anna Marie and have been a licensed cosmetologist now for 4 years. I Graduated from Brittany Beauty School on Long Island NY.
Since I have graduated I’ve immediately knew what I wanted to do, and that was to open my own salon. I was fortunate enough to have a large home space that would allow for this to happen, so do work out of my own home for now and i specialize in Hair cutting, Coloring & Chemical Treatments.
Although styling hair is what I love, I really do enjoy the education aspect of the hair industry, which is why I developed this blog. I will post all that I know as a cosmetologist from client consultation advice to - how to start up you own salon to - how to do a keratin treatment. I will do my best to spread my knowledge with my fellow cosmo girls.
If you ever have any questions I would love to answer them!  You can contact me via email @ [email protected]
