Eleanor Royce is the only child of Diana Royce, a real estate agent to the stars, and William Royce, a computer programmer and software developer. Her early childhood was pleasant. In elementary school, it was discovered Ellie was exceptionally gifted. Diana tried to discourage treating Ellie differently, worrying being labeled a "genius" would cause problems for her daughter, while William was having none of it. He made an effort to encourage his young, clever daughter in pursuing her studies and interests, wanting her to graduate school early. His love of computers and video games rubbed off on her and she started down a path in the STEM field. Ellie's status as a prodigy became the source of many arguments between her parents. Unfortunately, around her tenth birthday, William passed from a brain aneurysm. Ellie was devastated, but kept pursuing STEM in her father's memory, hoping he would be proud of her.
Her mother, struggling with the loss of her husband and becoming a single mother, quickly remarried to a big shot Hollywood producer she'd met while giving him a tour of a mansion in The Hills. At first, this man was sweet to Ellie, but as time passed, she learned it was to create a false sense of security in order to get close to her. Too close. She doesn't want to talk about it.
As she grew up with this new influence in her life, she was exposed to the seedy, toxic environment of Hollywood. Her mother slowly became more superficial and would often let her own insecurities affect how she treated Ellie. Ellie would be forced to go to red carpet events, galas, and parties of all types, despite her desire to simply stay home and play video games. Under threat of violence, Ellie did as she was told and played the part of the perfect daughter. Seeing how Hollywood was affecting those around her, she was determined to escape it, not wanting to turn out like so many of the socialites and stars. Despite her declining mental health, Ellie threw herself into her studies throughout high school and becoming valedictorian. She received a full scholarship to UCLA - Berkeley, majoring in cyber-security and business management, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. It was here she met her best friend and roommate Maddie. The two would eventually become lovers.
Between Maddie's positive influence and years of therapy she began coping better with her trauma, but it did not quench her thirst for revenge. He was still out there with more victims and he wasn't the only person she knew of abusing their power. Using her degrees, Ellie started her own data protection company and catered specifically to the Hollywood stars, using her mother's connections to gain clientele. What her clients didn't know is that she was phishing for information about others involved with her stepfather and his inner circle. She spent years hacking into people's phones and computers, desperate to find information that could bring down his empire.
How did she come to be in the Black Dragon, you ask? Fed up with the guilt weighing her down and seeing this man abuse his power, Ellie decided to take matters into her own hands, even if it meant giving up everything she had.He had to be taken out.
After speaking to some contacts she'd made during her years as a hacker, she discovered she could have someone take out her stepfather, for a fee. There were soldiers of fortune aplenty available, but for someone as high-profile and influential as her stepfather, there was only one option: The Black Dragon.
She struck a deal with Kano. If he protected her and kept her out of the public eye, she'd do whatever she could for his organization, offering her hacking skills and genius intellect. He accepted. Now, she's indebted to Kano, probably for the rest of her life. As a high-profile missing person and as a person of interest in her stepfather's disappearance, she'll never able to return to normal society. Echo is doomed to remain in the underworld forever, unless she wants to spend the rest of her life in prison or be hunted by the remaining members of her stepfather's network. Only Kano knows her true identity and he will keep it secret as long as she keeps her worth to the Black Dragon above the price on her head...

Here’s something I don’t see writers practicing enough: how big things can permanently change your character.
I see people putting their characters through war, abusive relationships, health disorders, and intense grief. Since popular writers often fail here, I hope you guys are also considering how these things will affect your character in the long run. I don’t mean “Oh, they have bad dreams now and are jerks to everyone, but only for a little while.” I mean has their entire outlook on life changed dramatically, and if so how? Does it show? Do they try to hide it and move on, or do they accept that this is who they are now? Does it take them a long time or a short time to realize things can never again be the way they were? How does that affect them? Do they choose to keep this new personality, or do they try to change it?
Not everyone wants to acknowledge this type of development in a character because it gets in the way of their plans or disrupts plot. Also, some characters are made of stern stuff or are just flexible enough to survive with their personality intact. Yet, major events in a story should leave a noticeable impact on a character, the more personal the event generally the bigger the personality change.
Just think about it if you haven’t already, y'know?

not to quote rent at you like the millennial queer i am, but the opposite of war isn't peace, it's creation.
make art. make music. make literature. make poetry. make clothing. make a birdhouse. make a meal. make a little guy. make a journey. make friendships. make community. make connections. make someone smile. make someone laugh. make someone burn bright with the assurance that they are loved. make a home.
your job on this earth is to care for yourself and be a blessing to those around you. we create a better world right here, where we stand, starting with us.

i sometimes like characters that fucking suck. when a character is a shit head in just the right way it can be so funny and/or compelling. like this is my beloved character, Asshole The Hater. they suck and i love them. someone dropped them into a ditch on the side of the road and i picked them out of the ditch and put them in my pocket

"But how do I get popular on tumblr if there's no algorithm??"
1: Being internet popular is not a good goal to have. Having your skill recognised is. But those two things are not the same.
2: You have to actually interact with the other human beings on this site. There is no shortcut.
