Small Batch : A Beginner’s Guide to Craft Whiskey
Don’t settle for another Jack & Coke. Take time this summer to explore the more sophisticated side of craft whiskies. We’ve put together a list of our staff’s favorite small-batch bourbons, ryes, and scotches from around the world.
Booker’s Bourbon
Age: 6 to 8 Years Proof: 121 to 127 Origin: Kentucky, US Taste: Smokey Vanilla, Dark Chocolate, Smoke, Coffee
Master distiller Booker Noe created Booker’s in the 200 year old tradition of small batch bourbons. As one of only a handful of undiluted cask-strength whiskeys available, Booker’s taste can be overpowering straight-up, so remember to cut it with branch water before drinking to enjoy.
Redbreast Pure Potstill Whiskey
Age: 12 Years Proof: 80 Origin: Cork, Ireland Taste: Black Pepper, Plums, Pipe Tobacco, Butterscotch
Redbreast is one of the few single potstill whiskeys still produced today. For more than 110 years the distillery has crafted Redbreast using Oloroso sherry casks during the maturation process. Redbreast has a rich, buttery consistency and a full Christmas cake taste. Enjoy a glass neat or cut with a splash of spring water.
Jura Superstition Single Malt Scotch
Age: Blended (13 years and 21 years) Proof: 86 Origin: Jura, Scotland Taste: Spice, Honey, Buttered Toast
Scotch has been distilled on the remote island of Jura since the 1600s. Today the island is still only accessible by ferry and the sea air plays a key role in the scotch’s maturation process. It’s so isolated that the island only has 200 inhabitants and a single highway. Superstition is far less peaty than many other scotch whiskies and is best enjoyed neat or on ice.
Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt Whisky
Age: 12 Years Proof: 80 Origin: Honshu, Japan Taste: Apple Cider, Toasted Almonds, Buttery Toffee, Custard
Named for the father of Japanese whisky and founder of Nikka, Masataka Taketsuru. Taketsuru worked at a number of Scottish distilleries before moving back to Japan. He founded Nikka with the idea of crafting whisky using old Scottish techniques that many distilleries had since abandoned. This light, flavorful whisky is sweet and pairs perfectly with soda water and ice.
Whiskey Cocktails
Enjoy these easy to mix whiskey cocktails with any premium of rye or bourbon.
Classic Whiskey Cocktail
Good whiskey tastes better the less you mess with it. Drink it with spring water or on ice. If you’re looking for a change you can mix a classic whiskey cocktail:
2 parts whiskey 1 part lemon juice A dash of sugar Ice Soda water Twist of lemon
Add whiskey, lemon juice, and sugar into lowball glass. Fill to top with ice and soda water. Garnish with twist of lemon.
Mint Julep
This Kentucky classic is a perfect summer drink. Mix one (or two) on a hot summer day:
3 parts bourbon Mint leaves Powdered sugar 1 table simple syrup Crushed ice
Pour 1 tablespoon simple syrup into tall glass. Add 2 sprigs mint and muddle. Add ice. Stir in bourbon. Add powdered sugar and garnish with mint. Drink with a straw.
Manhattan
The Manhattan was a favorite of Frank Sinatra and The Rat Pack. It’s simple to make and while there are dozens of variations, here is our favorite:
2 parts rye whiskey ½ oz dry vermouth 1 dash of bitters Maraschino cherry Ice
Stir whiskey, dry vermouth, bitters in a mixing glass with ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with maraschino cherry.
Branch Water -
Branch water is the term that Kentucky distilleries use for the water from nearby streams that they use to cut their whiskey before bottling. Add branch to your glass of whiskey for a more mellow taste. While some distilleries bottle and sell their local branch water you can use spring water instead.
Small Batch Whiskey -
Small batch doesn’t mean that there’s a limited quantity. It actually refers to a whiskey that is produced from a relatively small number of barrels. It’s usually a good indicator of quality for bourbon.
Whiskey or Whisky? -
It can seem a bit confusing but both spellings are correct. The spelling depends on where the spirits origin – a good way to sort them out is remembering that any country that has an ‘e’ in its name makes whiskey while all others make whisky.
