Will Virtual Avatars Replace Real Influencers
Tumblr media
Technology is (re)shaping our present. Everyone with internet can now create a virtual avatar of themselves.  Techopedia defines avatar as “a personalized graphical illustration that represents a computer user, or a character/ alter ego that represents that user.” With fashion industry exploring different options to present runway shows, the search for a new medium is on. The avatar has stepped into being a digital creation to show different expectations for fashion and technology. Fashion model and influencer Miquela Sousa has shown that virtual avatars can or be the next thing to replace real life individuals. An issue that has arise since virtual avatars are now coming back into the industry. The 19-year-old based in Los Angles has filled her Instagram feed with outfits looks from brands like Chanel, Proenza, Schouler, Supreme, Vetements, and Vans. However; no one truly knowns what she looks like. “Miquela is computer-generated and refuses to reveal who is actually behind her meticulously curated, yet clearly artificial persona,” quoted Morency (via businessoffashion).
Tumblr media
Miquela has already let it be known that she rather be known as an “artist” and not just superficial qualities. Virtual avatars or celebrities is not something that is new many have seen to forget the popular band Gorillaz whose identity is four animated characters.
“In 2013 Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs designed our costumes for virtual avatar Hatsune Miku, a sixteen-year-old Japanese singer who performs her concert on stage as an animated projection hologram and collaborated with Lady Gaga and Pharrell.”, quoted Morency (via businessoffashion).
This is opening new doors, because something such as this could be easily sent in an email.  Andrew Brownridge a researcher explains the importance of avatars and they way to open new doors to the fashion, but overall art industry. “The ability to animate the characters should enable use of the avatars and interaction across the internet.”
Tumblr media
“This could be used, for example, for a dance teacher Tokyo coaching a student in Alaska in real time and with accurate analysis, and similarly within the fashion world for virtual fitting rooms or show.” He even addresses the notion that avatars may replace people in some areas of fashion such as modeling. “I don’t think people will ever be entirely replaced there and always be a desire for real human interaction. I do think, however; that it will offer many more options and facilities what in the past has only been contemplated, stated Brownridge. Overall, virtual avatars have allowed and created accessibility to views or users. It allows the use free realm with creativity control for designer, and those who use it alike. It creates mystery and curiosity amongst those how these creations can step outside their main platform such as computer and video games as well impact other categories such as fashion.

Top Five 2000s Fashion Trends
Tumblr media
Remember when cool kids sparked a ’90s fashion wave with a return to retro sportswear and silky slip dresses? Once a big inspiration for designers when it came back to looking to their youth, the ’90s subsided into silence and opened the gateway for ’00s fashion trends to arise again.
It seems the industry is simultaneously exploring and avoiding the focus on individual expression, so it is no surprise that designers are bringing back some of the trends that had a love/hate relationship with fashion. It’s worth noting that this current decade, much like the start of ’90s fashion, had a way of showing that people can have a “sense of identity.”
Every era in fashion has something for which it is remembered: the 2010s brought back chokers and introduced the ombre hair trend. In contrast, the ’00s only had what the ’90s left behind, including subculture trends such as goth, emo, hipster and skater style identities. That was the cool thing about the aughts: It didn’t have many trends that stuck, which gave it room to open up fashion to art and music.
Here are some looks from the 2000s that are being re-worn by young Millennials and celebrities:
1.) Spaghetti- Straps- Tank-Tops
Spaghetti-strap tank-tops were a hit during 2000 to 2003; camisoles had built-in bras and came in every color in the rainbow. With summer being here, you can see the spaghetti-strap tank-tops returning to major stores from Old Navy to Neiman Marcus.
Tumblr media
2.) Tracksuits
From velour to eye-catching labels, tracksuits were a highlight for the moments when celebrities were shopping or out of the town. Now, Kanye West has his own version of the tracksuit in YEEZY Season 5. Check out Kylie Jenner in her Juicy Couture tracksuit.
Tumblr media
3.) Colorful Lenses
Tumblr media
Colorful lenses were it in the 2000s and celebrities loved to rock huge wrap-around sunglasses. Now this trend is coming back in style with rounded frames, aviators and cat eyes.
4.) Tube Tops
Tumblr media
Tube tops were not a favorite among fashion critics, and many did not believe that this would make its way back in style again. Surprise! The tops are making a comeback and many celebrities, such as Kendall Jenner, are embracing this trend
5.) Denim Skirts
Tumblr media
Denim skirts were also another item on the “not favorite” list. They were most popular in their shortest version — very high above the knee. Now the hemline has been lowered in its comeback, and celebrities such as Britney Spears still wear denim skirts.

Meet Student and Former FashionSchoolDaily Intern Mashawn Jones
Tumblr media
Recent Academy of Art University online and graduate student Mashawn Jones is a military kid who mainly grew up in Virginia and received his bachelor’s degree in government and dance from the College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 2008.
I contacted Jones through the AAUHOO “Academy of Art University” Facebook group for online students,  and we chatted about his experience being an online student and an intern for FashionSchoolDaily.
I thought this would be a great chance to hear about some of the challenges and differences for an online student versus an onsite student. Jones wanted to highlight that there are many opportunities for online students and, even though it may be more challenging for online students, we do have the same capabilities to show off our work.
1. Were you into fashion growing up?
I found it intriguing that some garments were softer than others and was memorized by different textures. Around middle school, I thought I wanted to be a designer. My drawing skills were lacking, but I always had a desire to get into the fashion industry.
2. What inspired you to study fashion journalism?
I was active duty Navy (I’m still in the reserves), and one of my goals was to strive to be a better writer.
(Navy writing is much different than what you learn in school.) While researching, I found various careers that surrounded fashion journalism and started looking into various programs. This is where I found the Academy and decided to apply for my master’s.
3. How did you develop your voice?
I developed my writing style from all my experiences whether in school or in a professional setting. The Academy helped refine my writing style, but they never tried to change it. When it comes to writing, I tend to lean more toward a succinct form.
Tumblr media
4. What are some other key skills that can help you when working to become a fashion journalist?
Stay true to yourself. Everyone’s path is slightly different, and no two journalists’ paths are the same. Know your niche and what excites you. If you’re excited about what you write, your audience can tell. I found that I excelled once I determined what I enjoyed talking about and my purpose for writing.
Learn the language, and this goes beyond English. Know proper terminology in fashion, various writing styles and the business in general. As a journalist, your job is to be knowledgeable of the industry and you must go beyond the surface. When communicating with professionals in the industry, you want them to know you have done your homework and you know what you are talking about.
5. Can you share a tough moment you had being an online student and interning? What were some of the challenges?
Being able to effectively communicate with your instructors, editors and others involved is the key.
Sometimes you will fail at properly multitasking but don’t let that get you down. Plan and prepare a backup and it is okay to take a mental day to get yourself together.
Tumblr media
6. If you were to pen an article right now, what would it be on?  Would you share your favorite article that you wrote for FashionSchoolDaily? There were quite a few articles that I enjoyed writing and it’s hard to narrow it to one.
However, I think I will go with “Black History Month: The Forgotten Legacy of Black American Designers.”
https://fashionschooldaily.com/index.php/2018/02/22/black-history-month-the-forgotten-legacy-of-black-american-designers/
7. What are some tips you would give to fashion students when it comes to going out into the fashion industry for jobs and internships?
In the process myself of looking for actual jobs in the industry, I would say get out there. Make connections and use the resources at your disposal. If an opportunity presents itself, then go for it, if it’s feasible. Lastly, truly know yourself.

Fashion Review featuring Susie Cave: The Fashion Empresses of Darkness
The darkness of beauty embraces not only Susie Cave design, but her own style. With her fashion label The Vampire’s Wife Cave has steadily gained fans since 2014. Once a former model, Cave began designing clothes for herself, mostly because she couldn’t find anything to wear that would fit her style and body.
Tumblr media
After losing her teenage son to a tragically incident close to home and battling depression. The model turns to fashion to help her deal with her sorrow. The success of the brand really helps spark back up her emotions. Cave designs focus on being beautiful, feminine, rather than the just the fashion-focused trend. Combined with the style and inspirations from vintage like a ruffled hem or ribbon tie.
Not only was the designer inspired by the vintage looks of the past, she also found inspiration in the famous The Bolshoi Ballet and Kiev Ballet Companies, embracing colors and costume designs help the designer grasp of a concept of how she wanted to start her own fashion line.
Cave learn to mix colors like purples, greens, gold and yellow. Her childhood readings and illustrations. For example, Cave created one of her skirts in a beautiful blue accessorized with pale-green socks and little brown shoes with an accent of red.
Tumblr media
Within the past year Cave line has made a drastic expansion: from silk cardigans, pastel shades design and high waisted pencil skirts. “Her style has matched something that was not seen yet in fashion,” says Ruth Chapman of Matchesfashion.com. Either know. Susie Cave discovered it the hard way fashion is art, and it has been known that art heals."

Fashion Review: Nanushka embraces influences and Instagram
Tumblr media
Out of 400 shows during NYFW, one brand is vying for attention among all the noise: Nanushka by Sandor. The designer Sandor of Nanushka fashion brands awaits with hopes to show her designs at New York fashion week for the first time. Designer has been working on her label for 13 years now. Describing her process, the designer notes that it wasn’t an inexpensive decision to make. The brand Nanushka main goal is a presentation that does not only want to present models, but potential buyers. After all the fame of the brand and Instagram popularity, Nanushka has shown the fashion world how a fashion line inspired by nomadic Eastern and Western cultures that show the aesthetics from her Hungarian roots.  The show includes faux leather dungarees, Parisian-inspired polka dot printed dress, and cropped print. Giving inspirations resemble to the far East. The collection was spread with colorful knits. The sensual outcome of the collection was solid and offering of a light version of fall attire.
Established in 2005, the designer a recent graduate of London College of Fashion. Sandor invested is an ample collection of boutiques making sells in Bird Brooklyn and worn by celebrities like Charlize Theron, stated by NYTimes. “Photos are important, Nanushka usually spend $20,000 on a look book for a series of professional photos,” stated Sandor. The Evolution of Street Style
Tumblr media
Street style, once a source of pure amusement and trend setting, has become a viable industry of its own . Bloggers, designers, and fashion consumers alike found a new street, pun intended, to walk on. Access to cheap yet quality photography was another tool that democratized access to street style reporting and coverage.
A big exponential jump from the the times Bill Cunningham began covering it for The New York Times in 1978 “The Myth of Street Style written by Sophie Woodard distills, “The phrase street style is present in multiples sites, ranging from magazines, exhibitions, blogs, academic texts, and in popular parlance, its association with individuality is one that arises out of its own mythologized and popularized histories.” In her article she aims to gather and look at street style beyond the trend. Woodard looks at street style as everyday practice for people not only by wearing and style clothes as a way of self-expression.
Tumblr media
“But, also considering fashion magazines, clothing sold on the high street, localized style groupings, and how individual assemble their outfits. Style is something that changes over time with the fashion industry mainly revolving around “fast fashion” an industry that is solely market around designs on the runway. The trend or context of street style challenges the ways of fast fashion as far as purchasing and wearing of clothing street style be early as the 1940’s. Street style was in Vogue before it was in Vogue.
For example, the “Zooties” in Harlem, the punk trend was a reaction that was inspired and established mainstream fashion designs for designers. With street style becoming innovated into the fashion industry it somewhat lost its subversive edge, stated Woodard. Either know, this happened street style still create phenomenon such as appearing in i-D and The Face magazine. It shows that this is the new thing for editorials, companies now have created the term “high street” its main goal is to gather consumers and their constitution of identities and therefore this is their attempt to offer diverse ways for consumers to create an identity.
Street style now goes above and beyond the individual clothing look or style. It’s something that determine how a lot of fashion ideas are proactive and allows current trends to step in. In Fashion as Photograph: Viewing and Reviewing Images of Fashion it explains how the street itself a context and space for is a photographer’s studio or even catwalk at times. Fashion, is no longer simplified by fashion images or professional models. “It is the everyday setting of ordinary people whose look feed the content of numerous fashion reports.” (Rocamond, O’Neill) Street photography and street style have come together to help the trend come a long way.
An individual way of dressing and putting on clothing for today’s look give photographers such as Scott Schulman a way to see fashion in a different light. For example, “The Sartorialist, simply to share photographs of people on the street that I thought looked great: (Grant, 2011) In six years Schulman narrow down the gap between photojournalism and fashion photography. Street style in photography was a branch of opportunity to and show what can go above the means of fashion. Street style and photography can be seen in the twentieth-century history of fashion media. Another example, in early issues of i-D the straight up was established as the magazine’s visual signature: a style of dress worn by ordinary people as opposed to professional models, combined in apparent disregard of dominant fashion and celebrated in the streets rather than in the rare field spaces in which fashion was usually found.” (Rocamora, O’Neill)
In fields of Fashion: Critical insights in Bourdieu discusses how street style has allowed transgression within the boundaries of high and current fashion. "The constant movement existing between the two; the influence of street style on high fashion is a case in point.” (Bourdieu) High fashion is the dominant fashion and probably will remain that way as long as the dominant culture is still sufficient.
However; fashion designers do transgress the lone between high fashion and mass fashion. As stated earlier, street style is just not a trend. It can be also looked at in distinct stages with fashion designers looking for a new inspiration for a collection. Street style has become the sub field of high fashion.
For example, “themes and techniques may be borrowed and recombined in other content for other ends.” (Bourdieu)
Tumblr media
High fashion is embody in two dimensions: the mass as well elite; high and current fashion will continue to let street style to create a balance between the glamour of fashion. Overall, street style has made it more into the fashion industry. Researchers, marketers, advertisements, photography and the fashion industry alike have created a road for street style to become a powerful medium that has made high fashion edgy as well bold.

My First Trunk Club Experience
Theme: Lady in the Woods
Photographer:@kenji_evu
Tumblr media
Central Saddle Stripe Saddle Shirt:
XXS|MadeWell|Blue... $69.50
Recently, I got the opportunity to try out Trunk Club by Nordstorm. Trunk Club is a personalized mid-to-high end men’s and women clothing service based in Chicago, Illinois.
Sharing the details:
Trunk Club allows you to get your own personal stylist, and they help you find clothes that fit your lifestyle, and budget its pretty amazing. In addition to this, you can also connect you Pinterest to your profile and send your stylist pins  to help them create your Trunk.
It costs $25.00 for shipping and handling which can range from two-three business days. Once you receive your trunk you are allowed a week to try on and wear the clothes. The items you decide to keep you will be charge and the items you do not keep want you have to send back.
Trunk Club provides you with a  free return shipping label and you can drop off your Trunk at the nearest Nordstorm store or UPS.
My Overall Experience:
My stylist was very nice, helpful, and informative. I sent her one of my pins from Pinterest and she indeed match the details with what I was going for with this fashion photo shoot.
Trunk Club does do a basic profile of gathering information such as your sizing, favorite colors, things you do not wear/like, etc. Everything was pretty good on sizing expect one pair of pants that were too big for me. But I am a tiny person and sometimes even a size 2 is too big for me when it comes to jeans.
The quality and branding of the clothes were great. My favorite item was the Dr.Martens. I’m already a fan of the brand, and the boots were the overall star in my shoot.
Why I chose this brand?
The reason I choose this particular brand, because I literally saw it everywhere on social media. I never thought about trying a online styling platform, but I’m glad I gave it a try. I didn’t keep any of the items for my first trunk, because this was sort of my trial and error run.
However, my next trunk is schedule for May 1-7th and I will be keeping some of the items this round. I posted my pictures on Instagram, and Trunk Club message me personally telling me that they love the photos, and glad I enjoyed the experience.
