Friday June 7 at 3:30PM I'll be at Colleton County Memorial Library in Walterboro SC giving a talk and presentation on Pirates in the Lowcountry. Admission is free and open to the public. Come learn the true history of pirates who left their mark not just in the Colonies or the Carolinas, but right here in the SC Lowcountry!
(I promise I did not write the overly-glowing descripion on the flyer!)

My 192nd pirate article for Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Welch_(pirate)
Welch was a pirate trader who took over Adam Baldridge's fort at St. Mary's Island in 1698 after Malagasy natives rebelled over Baldridge's slave-trading. Welch met and had dealings with William Kidd, Robert Culliford, Dirk Chivers, Giles Shelley, Edward Davis, Tempest Rogers, Samuel Burgess, John Swann, and more.

Golden Age Pirate Research!
Just published an article in the journal Humanities titled “Merrily to Hell Together”: Threats of Self-Destruction among Golden Age Pirates. It looks at some context and causes surrounding twenty incidents where pirates or their victims were willing to blow themselves up to avoid capture.
This is the second special issue they've published devoted to pirates. Neither are paywalled, so check out both issues for some great pirate history and analysis. The second issue will add more essays over the next several weeks so keep an eye on it for more content.

Game and Word blog's month-long series on Assassin's Creed: Black Flag and real pirate history
The excellent, in-depth substack Game and Word has been turning out lengthy, in-depth pieces over the last month exploring how genuine history from the Golden Age of Piracy interacts with and crosses over into Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. It's an excellent read and if you want to dive into some serious analysis not only of the history behind AC:BF but how it weaves in and out of "being a game" then I highly recommend checking out the whole blog.
Link to the first AC:BF piece: https://gameandword.substack.com/p/issue-21-pirates-creed-part-1
The second: https://gameandword.substack.com/p/issue-22-pirates-creed-part-2
And the third: https://gameandword.substack.com/p/23-pirates-creed-part-3
I sat down with Game and Word's mastermind Jay for a deep dive podcast into pirate history, AC:BF, and other pirate games like Sea of Thieves, Sid Meier's Pirates, and more. Take a listen here: https://gameandword.substack.com/p/bonus-pirate-historian-matt-mclaine
Enjoy!

These 25 pirate trading cards were issued in either 1970 or 1976 (sources disagree) by Goodies Limited / Goodies Sweets of Bristol, UK. They came as promotional cards in packs of Goodies candy cigarettes. The pack’s glossy full-color front image was unrelated to the card inside.

This set of 50 Cadet Sweets trading cards came out in 1957. It was reissued in 1959 with new art and some different cards. Art on front, description and title on back; cards were 1-3/8" x 2-5/8" but varied slightly between printings. Notable for some pirates rarely seen in these sets like Charles Vane, Stede Bonnet, and Dragut Reis, plus scenes like Turtling and Harry Glasby’s Trial.

The 1961 Fleer Pirates Bold 66-card set features color art on the front and descriptions on the back. Subjects are a mix of buccaneers, Golden Age pirates, and 19th century figures, with some fictional pirates too. Descriptions are rarely accurate. Cards 1-33 are portrait cards while cards 34-66 feature the same subjects in action. Some packs contained stickers featuring (non-pirate) “Flags of the Spanish Main.”

Variously cited as issued in 1965 or 1968, these 24 pirate cards were distributed in Europe with the Van Den Berghs Ltd. company’s “Milkana Mild” dairy products. Each card features impressive front artwork with text descriptions on the back. Most show the usual subjects like Blackbeard and Morgan alongside a few names seen less often on trading cards such as Henry Mainwaring.
