The reason why new technologies don't turn out the way science fiction writers envision is because a lot of SF writers, particularly in the 20th century, instinctively defaulted to technological determinism, whereby technologies exist on their own merits and society is configured by them. It's about making sure that transgender people are not legally equal to cisgender people, that we know we have fewer right, that we are less than human.

from one chronically anxious person to another: the world is not going to go up in flames. What happens will be more slow, more bureaucratic, more boring. It is so disingenuous when supermarkets have "grown by: Farmer X" on their packaging because it's like, I'll be looking at a pack of strawberries grown by farmer x and he'll actually be the managing director of a fruit farm that employs 2,000 people as pickers!
