Ain’t we cute?😍 Thank you @fait.nola for the sweet pic... and for having the cutest plant truck in NOLA. 🌱 As an aside, I’m officially less than 30 days away from turning 40. I’m focusing on being grateful in effort to combat self doubt and comparison- which as we all know, is the kiss of death. It’s been said that you can’t hold the energy of gratitude and fear at the same time... also bullshit. We all hold seemingly conflicting emotions at any given moment... Increasing complexity, layers of depth and mystery... these are gifts you can give to yourself, not things to run from. The older I get the less I have figured out, the less I know who I am, and - I suppose- the less I care to define the energetic chaos that is my “self”. I’m happy riding the ride for now. The ride is filled with exactly the things I’ve wished for: lots of laughter & kisses, tons of plants, & cats (& dogs!), and to dance around with mud and glitter on my boots. “Our Lady Calcasieu” 🦅 36” x 48” (Hope to get a better photo soon- there’s a bit of a glare 😬) Begun Feb 10, 2018 Finished December 10, 2018 While meditating I had a vision where a woman who was part Eagle, & part light-kaleidoscope-geometry came to chat with me for awhile. . I was born in Calcasieu Parish but I’d never lived there before February of this year. My family left when I was 9 months old. Oddly enough, I only stayed 8 months as an adult. 🤷🏻‍♀️ . When I started the painting I didn’t know that Calcasieu means “crying eagle” in Atakapa. I very much feel like some spirit of the land spoke to me in that vision- hence the title. Of course most of the people around there would totally mock this... . This turned out to be a deeply personal painting, and finishing it feels like a door closed and another opened at the same time. Hope y’all like it 💜 Oh yeah- she glows in black light. . 12:12 portal is tomorrow, finished this just in time. Earlier this year when I found myself in a new city (Lake Charles, not NOLA where I am now), I was a little shell shocked. I was also pretty broke after a chain of sad & expensive events- but I had enough for some groceries. I was feeling grateful and hopeful. As I was checking out the cashier from the lane behind me, not my cashier, asked me to hand her my bag of shredded cabbage. Confused me handed it over. She scanned it and handed it to my cashier, who put it into a bag. Now I was really confused. I turned around and asked the lady like a doofus, “Uh... did you just pay for my cabbage?” She laughed and said yes, she did. She had about $3 left on her SNAP card and she couldn’t use it, so she decided to pay it forward. She knew she could cover cost of the cabbage. I fumbled for my words as I thanked her. That $3 cabbage stands out in my memory as one of the most beautiful acts of kindness. It stands out to me especially because I was so broke, scared, and lonely for the few months that I was there. Without knowing about any of that, this stranger reminded me that there are an infinite number of simple ways to spread kindness. She clearly wasn’t wealthy and this wasn’t an act of charity. It was an act of kindness. It reminded me that this life, for all its chaotic & violent uncertainty, is rooted in love, which we can water and grow if we choose. Today is World Kindness Day, and I’m remembering that random stranger with the cabbage, and the best coleslaw I’ve ever eaten because it was infused with that experience. If you hold any object up to the light it will cast a shadow. Without the contrast of shadow and light, we really can’t see the object. Vision requires contrast. Likewise, if you hold an idea up to the light of public scrutiny, if it holds any weight at all it will create contrasting opinions. If you create anything that’s worth a damn, it will be both loved and hated by other people. The best way to tell if you are doing something of substance, something that really matters, is by creating something with enough substance to displace the light around it and cast a shadow. When you dare to speak up with substance, without worrying that you’ll offend people, you will displace some of the murky, watered-down culture… If you’re lucky, you’ll create some contrast. It might take some time to learn how. Don’t let the guarantee of public ridicule stop you from trying. Anything that matters will have haters. Earn your haters. ———————— I haven’t posted for awhile... I’ve been trapped in a self-imposed cave of overwhelm. I made some really unoriginal mistakes as a baby digital freelancer- taking on too many projects for not enough money 🤷🏻‍♀️ live and learn! I’m catching up though. I love all the learning too. After hand painting these intricate patterns... half a day yesterday, and today for 10 hours; I feel simultaneously really zen, AND like a crazy person who makes terrible choices. . Her environment is complete, I’m ready to paint her face! . Also, my hand is swollen and my back is yelling at me. But I want to finish this chic tonight cause deadlines! So I will. (I don’t advocate working like this- and I don’t make a habit of it. But sometimes you do what must be done!) (plus it’s really fun 😁) . Some progress today- still a long way from finished! . I felt so scattered today, truly trying to do too many projects at once. But I listened to an awesome webinar about how our unconscious stories about reality keep us locked in holding patterns. It was somewhat convicting for me... . I thought about how I take on too much, spin my wheels, stress out, feel like a failure, give up, start again... over and over! It’s ridiculous and I lmao’ed when I realized that I was choosing to do this.😂 . Carl Jung said, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will rule your life and you will call it fate.” . We can choose to tell ourselves a different story about our lives at any point. We can look for different evidence for why we feel a certain way at any point. Every second is a new chance. Lots of people are cynical about change- and you know what? They’re boring. Holding patterns are boring. Day 21: 100 #100daysofgratefulattention . “When things are going bad: Don’t get all bummed out, don’t get startled, don’t get frustrated. No. Just look at the issue and say, “GOOD.” . Now I don’t mean to say something trite; I’m not trying to sound like Mr. Smiley Positive Guy. That guy ignores the hard truth. That guy thinks a positive attitude will solve problems. It won’t. But neither will dwelling on the problem. No. Accept reality, but focus on the solution. Take that issue, take that setback, take that problem, and turn it into something good. Go forward. And, if you are part of a team, that attitude will spread throughout. . Finally: if you can say the word “good,” then guess what? It means you’re still alive. It means you’re still breathing. And if you’re still breathing, that means you’ve still got some fight left in you. So get up, dust off, reload, recalibrate, re-engage- and go out on the attack.” . -Jocko Willink, from the book Discipline Equals Freedom . So far, this chapter has been my favorite in this book. Sometimes I need a book/mentor/voice that doesn’t fall for my weird combo of self pity + perfectionism and will push me a bit. This one is doing the trick. .
