Big thanks to computer teacher, Colin Melton, for giving me movie posters of Y.A. books that have been turned into movies. He worked at a theater before getting his current teaching gig and was kind enough to offer to hook me up! They look awesome in the library. :-)

Carl Deuker (Gym Candy, Night Hoops, Payback Time) continues to bring his A-game to his catalogue of great Y.A. sports novels. In Swagger, Jonas is a promising high school basketball player who, with improved grades and the encouragement of a new young coach, hopes to score a coveted basketball scholarship to a good university. All that changes, though, when he discovers the horrific secret being kept by teammate and best friend, Levi. Is it worth jeopardizing his future to do the right thing? Without spoiling the plot twist, let me just say this is a great sports book with a timely subject matter. #yalit

When an 8-mile long, 2-mile wide tornado levels her hometown, Jersey literally loses everything: her home, mother, sister, even her school. With nothing and no one left, how will Jersey survive? Her heartwrenching account, which takes the reader through the eye of the storm to its destructive and deadly aftermath, will tear you up, and I guarantee you won't watch a news reports about such natural disasters as this quite the same way again. #yalit

School for students hasn't even started back yet, but I found this post-it on my circ desk keyboard when I went in for a bit this afternoon. THIS is why I love my job. ♥

School starts back in *gulp* 2 more weeks, and I've been struggling to get my back-to-school mojo in gear. This book our staff was asked to read has helped though - and it's a quick read too! Based on the work atmosphere at Seattle's Pike Place Fish Market, in a nutshell (clamshell?) here's what we can all do to make our jobs more pleasurable and productive while providing our customers/students with a positive experience... 1. Choose your attitude - you can go in thinking, "This day sucks," or go in saying, "What can I do to make this a great day?" Watch the company you keep too - better to spend your time with glass-is-half-full rather than glass-is-half-empty people. 2. Play - as the Joker would say, "Why so serious?" Maintain a sense of humor amidst the insanity and allow yourself some fun! A good laugh with a coworker or student can go a long way. 3. Be there - don't let outside or personal distractions (hello, phone and social media!) keep you from focusing on clients/students when they need and deserve your full attention. This is necessary in reverse too - leave work at work when your home situation needs you. 4. Make their day - you shouldn't be kind to others just to make yourself feel better, yet nothing quite makes a person feel so good as when he or she has helped or done something good for others. A small gesture to help someone else can do a lot to energize yourself. #NOTyalit

The story is sorta out there, but I totally loved it! At sixteen, Travis is at death's door, his body losing the fight against cancer, until an experimental doctor offers him a unique opportunity - he will severe Travis's cancer-free head and cryongenically freeze it until a healthy lower torso is available for re-attachment. Told ya the story is out there - just go with it. So five years after Travis loses his head to modern science, a healthy body becomes available, and Travis becomes only the second Nogginstein in the world to survive the procedure. Back to life as normal? Uh, not quite. Travis's memories of his previous life may not have skipped a beat, but his loved ones have grieved his possible permanent death and life moved on for them - his parents aren't sure what to do with him, gay best friend Kyle now has a girlfriend, and girlfriend Cate has a fiance. There's also the whole celebrity freak boy thing with journalists, pundits and his own neighbors and classmates debating whether this kind of science is a good or bad thing. Extrememly funny, engaging and thought-provoking, Noggin is one of my favorite reads this year. #yalit

My six-word review: Simple, but heartrending in its simplicity. Some samples from the student authors... Met online; love before first sight. They screamed "nobody." I believed them. Defined by numbers: age, weight, SATs. I needed Daddy; he needed meth. My scars: Everybody stares. Nobody asks. I fulfilled my awkwardness quota today. The exits were entrances in disguise. A boy wizard saved my life. *Highly recommended for ELA/creative writing friends - thinking I may do a wall of these in the library if my students will contibute. ;-)
