🥰🥰🥰
Regarding my thesis, it's languishing on my computer, unlooked at since I turned it in over 2 years ago, lol 😂 I have complicated feelings about it—it's good academic work, but the conclusion I reached in the essay is very much at odds with my feelings as a fan of Cas and the show, lol. So… I have no idea what I want to do with it, if anything! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(What I do know is that more people should publish academic work that focuses on Castiel specifically, because what I discovered in writing my thesis is that there is ALMOST NONE!! Seriously. This is a crime in my opinion.)
I just wanted to say hello! I'm a fellow Supernatural fan, and I studied English literature and linguistics. I caught your OTW Five Things Q&A and really enjoyed reading it :D What you talked about with "walking the middle ground" between the Dutches was particularly interesting. I am also intrigued by your thesis! 👀 I wrote my (undergrad) thesis on Castiel, lol. Not sure when I'll have a chance to read your thesis, but I know I will at some point! Hope you have a great day 😊
This is so sweet, wtf?? Thank you so much for the lovely words, I really appreciate it ❤️
Is that Castiel thesis available somewhere? 👀

A Year with Duck Prints Press: Our 2024 Publications
Tumblr media
We’ve had a busy year at Duck Prints Press – we published two anthologies, a novella, a novel, and moved many other projects along. All except our most recent, A Truth Universally Acknowledged, are available from our webstore and from many other retail and library sources. 46 short stories also debuted to our Patreon as new releases exclusively available to our backers, bringing the total number of titles available to our Patrons up to 94 stories. Many of our past titles are now available in print (instead of digital-only), including about half the short stories on our webpage (zines only sold when we vend in person, currently!) and our four novelettes (which can all be purchased online). And we didn’t only create books – our Mythical Creature Pride pins and stickers were a flagship art project for the year, and we’ve released 5 monthly art pieces exclusive to our Patrons. Basically: we’ve had an awesome year, made a ton of amazing stuff, and we’re so so glad that y’all have been along with us for the ride.

Aether Beyond the Binary
How would Earth look if the very atoms around us were suffused with magical aether? How would our lives be different if this aether was discovered last year, or last century, or last millennia? How might the people who lived with this magic explore their gender identities? These are the questions we posed to the 17 authors who contributed to Aether Beyond the Binary. Their inventive answers comprise this must-not-miss collection about magical realms, adventures and mysteries, new chances and well-earned endings, and characters as gender-diverse as the worlds they inhabit.

Hockey Bois by A. L. Heard
Nick Porter has always loved hockey. Ever since he can remember, it’s been his favorite thing in the world. It’s too bad he never learned to play, he’d tell himself, but it was too late to do it now. Adults don’t just magically learn to skate and join a hockey team. That’d be ridiculous.
Except maybe they do? On a whim, he decides to sign up for an adult  beginner’s class. He learns to skate, joins a team, and meets a really hot teammate… and it’s pretty much a disaster from there on out.

Many Hands: An Anthology of Polyamorous Erotica
For those who love their short stories spicy, we’re delighted to bring you Duck Prints Press’s debut explicit anthology Many Hands: An Anthology of Polyamorous Erotica. In this collection of brand-new stories, we celebrate many flavors of polyamory. Orgy? Yes please! Mnage à trois? C’est magnifique! Foursomes and moresomes? Delighted to attend! We asked our contributors to blow our minds with their fun combinations, unusual settings, favorite trope usage, and (of course) super sexy smut—and they didn’t disappoint. From a vampire free-for-all to a heartfelt reunion, from surprise soulmates to enemies-to-lovers, this collection has polyamory in lots of scrumptious varieties that lovers of erotica won’t want to miss!

Scrap Metal Angel by Nicola Kapron
Reality, tiny and fragile, is cut off from the sea of chaos and nightmares that surrounds it by seven Gates. One of them is open—and has been since the Stone Age. Through that opening, strange creatures and energies slip through. Some are malevolent. None are harmless. And all of them must be kept a secret.
Every hidden magical world needs a shadowy clean-up crew. Adrian Somer is a Gatekeeper, sworn to protect the cosmic Gates, to defend reality from the unknown entities that exist beyond them, and to help those whose lives are affected by magic.
When a grieving sorceress starts punching holes in reality to try and resurrect her murdered fiancé, Adrian must turn to a ghost from his past in order to save the city, and perhaps the world—even if that means digging up someone he thought was safely buried: the twin brother he killed eight years ago.

A Truth Universally Acknowledged: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” With this third installment in our “Queer Fanworks Inspired By…” anthology series, we set out to explore the truth by which we at Duck Prints Press live: that a classic work without a single canonically queer character must be in want of a very LGBTQIA+ makeover! “A Truth Universally Acknowledged: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice,'” with 21 short stories and 20 full-page color artworks, is just that. 38 creators have contributed to this project, drawing inspiration from Pride and Prejudice’s characters and story to create delightful, thoughtful, intriguing, and (of course) very queer fanworks and Pride and Prejudice-inspired original works. For this collection, we encouraged our creators to focus on Sapphic/wlw relationships and/or transgender and genderqueer interpretations for their inspiration, though those are definitely not the only types of queer we’ve fit into this diverse collection.
Happy New Year, everyone! We wish you the best for 2025!

A patient, explaining what their relationship is to their new visitor who was headed up to see them, said, “he’s my guardian,” and I said “oh I didn’t you had a legal guardian,” and the patient said, “he’s not my legal guardian, he’s my spiritual and physical guardian. He is also my brother. Well, I say he’s my brother. He’s like a brother. He’s my husband.” And I say this with genuinely no judgment, just pure curiosity, what

Hey! Is there anyone who has been active in the Supernatural fandom since at least 2016 who doesn't mind me going through their archive and reblogging old art?
I've been archiving and tagging art according to their year for a while now, but I am getting out of blogs to go through, so I am looking for some new sources :)

How to Use the Reference Desk
Tumblr media
The SPN Reference Desk is here for all of your nichest, most seemingly insignificant questions about Supernatural canon as well as comprehensive guides covering the basics in one single space. Unlike a fandom wiki, these guides are aimed specifically at the needs of creators and fan-fiction authors who want to dive deeper into certain topics like Baby’s specs, Bobby’s house layout, or how the hell the boys’ different guns work.
Tumblr media
Types of Guides - SPN Reference Desk written guides - SPN Reference Desk screenshots - Art references - How-to guides - Other people’s guides
Reference Desk guides will be broken down into categories. Within those categories, each guide will be grouped by topic and tagged for easy access.
Due to the “work in progress” nature of this blog, categories and topics that are listed below but don’t have a link are guides planned for the future.
Locations - Bobby’s House - Singer Auto Salvage - Men of Letter’s Bunker - etc. Car Talk - Baby (1967 Impala) - Castiel’s Pimpmobile (1978 Continental) - John’s truck (1986 GMC) - etc. Weaponry - Handguns           - Dean’s M1911           - Sam’s PT92           - “The Colt” - Shotguns           - Ithaca 37           - Remington 870 - Ammunition - Blades - Magical weapons - etc. Lifestyle - Personal belongings - Travel - In-universe brands - etc.
Have a suggestion for a guide? Got a specific question you need help answering? Drop an ask and leave a question for your librarian!

you know what doesn’t get talked about enough in writing circles
completed story grief
That feeling you are left with when you have finished a long project - whether it is long because it contains a lot of words, or long because it took you a long time to write, or long because it took you a long time to start writing it - when you’re happy because you finished it but empty because it is finished. You took out all of the words that were inside of you, at least all of the ones that pertain to that story, and the relief that follows such an action can be devastatingly exhausting.
On top of just the empty feeling, there follows that bittersweet sense of understanding that this thing which has for so long been your companion is no longer just your companion, and that you have in some ways severed the ties with it, because you will not be writing it anymore. You might write other stories related to it. You might write stories in the same world. Or stories with the same characters. But THAT story is finished. That story has been taken out of you and put where it can be a part of everyone that reads it. That is unimaginably happy and sad at the same time.
So I just want to say, I guess, be nice to yourself after you finish a story. Yes it’s happy, yes it feels good. But if you also feel a little like you’ve just lost something, give yourself some time to process that, because in a way you did. It’s a happy loss, the sort of loss wildlife rescuers feel when an animal they saved is able to go back and be wild again. It’s a good, happy thing, but it’s also okay to take a little time to be sad and take care of yourself.

Hey SPN tumblr,
I'm looking for a destiel fic to read that's plot heavy (gotta save Cas from the Empty) but everything I'm finding is like 'bam, Cas is back, now they're rebuilding a cabin together'. No hate on those fics - I've read dozens of them and *loved* them; it's just not what I'm fixating on right now.
If anyone knows of any plot heavy rescue mission fics, please please pretty please drop them in the comments. I would SO appreciate it.

I love it when people take fic writing seriously. I love when it's not 'Here's this dumb thing I wrote' and instead it's 'Here's this thing I put blood, sweat and tears into. Here's this thing I slaved away at, trying new writing techniques and editing over and over. Here's this dialogue that kept me awake at night. Here's this beautiful turn of phrase I thought up. Here's this thing that I wrote with vulnerability and heart, and I am proud to share it with you.'

Today I finally thought of a title for a WIP that had been untitled for quite some time!
The moment it popped into my brain I was like, "There it is!" What a great feeling 😊
It'll be a while before I get to that fic, but I reread my notes for it just for funsies before going to sleep the other night. And I guess having it in RAM meant when my thoughts were drifting today, the right things bumped together ✨
Time to update the ol' list o' WIPs with another cryptic initialism.

“A Truth Universally Acknowledged”: Sixth Teaser Post!
There’s only a few days left to back the crowdfunding campaign for A Truth Universally Acknowledged: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.”We’re only $500 away from our funding goal as I type this, and there’s one day left on our Small Business Saturday/Cyber Monday flash backer level with lots of great stuff offered at an amazing price and big discount! As for right now, there are so many teasers to do, and so little time left! Today, let’s meet another two artists and three authors!
Story Teaser: Lyonel Loy
Title: Much Ado (About Quite a Lot)
Excerpt:
A good stout walloping wins over lunges and parrying and all of that other Proper Stuff, Mrs Bennet has always found, and a parasol is far more like a stick than a sword.
Darcy advances, feints once, and lunges—and Mrs Bennet opens his parasol.
“What!” Darcy cries, into a wide expanse of laced canopy.
“What indeed!” Mrs Bennet agrees. He shuts his brolly as swiftly as it opened, and thwaps! Darcy soundly about his squared shoulders.
Art Teaser: A. A. Weston
A. A. Weston created the artwork for our lovely Pride peacock note cards. There are four different designs – three are being offered to backers of this Kickstarter campaign, and the fourth is the bonus extra for our Patreon backers who also back the campaign – patrons at the $10/month and $25/month levels who also support A Truth Universally Acknowledged will get five note cards and envelopes, no matter what campaign level they support!

Title: Aroace Mary Living Her Best Life
Tumblr media
Story Teaser: Sage Mooreland
Title: It’s Just You
Excerpt:
“ANCHOVY! NO!”
That cry was the only warning Milla had. She looked in time to see a large silvery-gray blur, and then there were entirely too many limbs, heads, and tails for anything to make sense. She was aware enough that “Anchovy” must be the blur and that said blur must be a dog. Said conclusion was reached by the weight landing solidly on her chest and a large tongue bathing her face in enthusiastic greeting.
“Ackglrppffft!” Milla spluttered, laughing helplessly under the affectionate onslaught. She tried to protect her face enough to focus on what was happening, but between the dog’s determination and her laughing, she had absolutely no success.
A second dog appeared, making Milla laugh harder. The second was more interested in licking her arms, but fortunately, a human arrived very quickly after the second dog.
“I’m so sorry—Annie, c’mon. Sam, you’re not any better. Let ’em up!” Somehow, the dogs were wrestled off, and Milla, still mildly giggling, sat up wiping her face with the edge of her shirt.
“Are you okay?” The dog owner’s voice pulled Milla’s attention upward to meet the most beautiful—and worried-looking—light-green eyes she could remember seeing.
Art Teaser: Amalia Zeichnerin
Title: If only they could see it
Tumblr media
Story Teaser: ilgaksu
Title: The Parsonage Becomes Her
Excerpt:
Well, today they buried the bastard. I cannot say I am shocked. He brought the final end to his long-seated dissipation fully and entirely on himself. Victor Whistham deserves the warm spot in Hell that has been waiting for him; and if women of my ilk are to join him, I will relish the quality seat to his suffering. No, what shocks me is how much the burying wounds me. For although I have longed—how I have longed, Theodosia!—to see the back of him, there’s something about death that scrounges within you for the last scrap of tender feeling you possess towards a man. And isn’t widowhood, for one such as me, just becoming a twice-abandoned wife? It reopens all the old wounds of it.
What am I to do, trapped amongst the horrible Ton, with you off in your blessed rolling hills?
This crowdfunding campaign ends on Thursday, December 5th at 1:15 p.m. Eastern time. Time is running out, so check it out while the checking it out is good!

Back “A Truth Universally Acknowledged” Today!
Tumblr media
We’re thrilled to announce that the crowdfunding campaign for our next anthology, A Truth Universally Acknowledged: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” is now live on Kickstarter – and already selected by them as a project they love!
With this third installment in our Queer Fanworks Inspired By… anthology series, we set out to explore the truth by which we at Duck Prints Press live: that a classic work without a single canonically queer character must be in want of a very LGBTQIA+ makeover! A Truth Universally Acknowledged: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, with 21 short stories and 20 full-page color artworks, is just that. We’re also offering an awesome array of merchandise – art prints and note cards and an enamel pin and a folding fan and more!
Tumblr media
We’ll be posting more information about the campaign and the contributing creators throughout the next couple weeks, so make sure to give us a follow on social media.
This campaign ends on December 5th 2024 – don’t miss your chance to get all this awesome stuff! Become a backer today!
It’s also a great time to become a Patreon backer – and you’ll get a free bonus piece of merch if you back both the “A Truth Universally Acknowledged” campaign and are a $10/month or $25/month level supporter!
