Sometimes, I think I over-talk and over-message to try and feel a connection that can’t be found in the simple white noise banter. Maybe it’s a cry for comfort. I don’t need help, but comfort? It’s a siren call that brings me into murky depths for a taste of home.

The anxiety crawled off her skin like ants off a corpse. Tears raced each other down her cheeks like they’d been prisoners awaiting freedom. She wrapped her finger in her hair and pulled until it felt she’d tear in half to match the aching pieces of her heart. She screamed into the howling winds of her mind:

I would ask my mom who her favorite child was. And she’d try to be fair with her response, “my favorite is whoever is the farthest away. The one who needs me the most at that moment” not realizing she was condemning me, for I was the one SHE needed to depend on.
