Part of the ancient Roman road to Gaul near the Italian town of Donnas in Aosta Valley has been carved into the rock, bearing a testament to the Roman engineering capabilities. It was constructed during the time of Augustus.

it has to be said i <3 characters who are victims of circumstances they created for themselves. especially when the bed they made for themselves to lie in is so horribly cruel and punishing that it interrogates the idea that anyone can be truly said to "deserve" anything at all.

“I had a room to myself as a kid, but my mother was always quick to point out that it wasn’t my room, it was her room and I was merely permitted to occupy it. Her point, of course, was that my parents had earned everything and I was merely borrowing the space, and while this is technically true I cannot help but marvel at the singular damage of this dark idea: That my existence as a child was a kind of debt and nothing, no matter how small, was mine. That no space was truly private; anything of mine could be forfeited at someone else’s whim.”  ― Carmen Maria Machado, In the Dream House

Ref Recs for Whump Writers
Violence: A Writer’s Guide:  This is not about writing technique. It is an introduction to the world of violence. To the parts that people don’t understand. The parts that books and movies get wrong. Not just the mechanics, but how people who live in a violent world think and feel about what they do and what they see done.
Hurting Your Characters: HURTING YOUR CHARACTERS discusses the immediate effect of trauma on the body, its physiologic response, including the types of nerve fibers and the sensations they convey, and how injuries feel to the character. This book also presents a simplified overview of the expected recovery times for the injuries discussed in young, otherwise healthy individuals.
Body Trauma: A writer’s guide to wounds and injuries. Body Trauma explains what happens to body organs and bones maimed by accident or intent and the small window of opportunity for emergency treatment. Research what happens in a hospital operating room and the personnel who initiate treatment. Use these facts to bring added realism to your stories and novels.
10 B.S. Medical Tropes that Need to Die TODAY…and What to Do Instead: Written by a paramedic and writer with a decade of experience, 10 BS Medical Tropes covers exactly that: clichéd and inaccurate tropes that not only ruin books, they have the potential to hurt real people in the real world.
Maim Your Characters: How Injuries Work in Fiction: Increase Realism. Raise the Stakes. Tell Better Stories. Maim Your Characters is the definitive guide to using wounds and injuries to their greatest effect in your story. Learn not only the six critical parts of an injury plot, but more importantly, how to make sure that the injury you’re inflicting matters.
Blood on the Page: This handy resource is a must-have guide for writers whose characters live on the edge of danger. If you like easy-to-follow tools, expert opinions from someone with firsthand knowledge, and you don’t mind a bit of fictional bodily harm, then you’ll love Samantha Keel’s invaluable handbook

It doesn’t look that exciting, but this linen is from the New Kingdom (ca. 1492–1473 B.C.)
Thinking about it for too long makes me feel absolutely insane.

Drombohilly Stone Circle
This ancient circle is on the Beara Peninsula in Co. Kerry, SW Ireland. An absolutely stunning place if you have the constitution to reach it (which lbr I was definitely pushing but LOOK I needed to get here!!)
10 of 11 stones are still standing and all in original upright positions too except the one portal stone leaning at an angle. But this leaning stone is still freestanding! The last stone of the 11 has fallen and split in two, and is already mostly obscured by spiky gorse growing overtop it. The short recumbent stone is similarly obscured almost completely but not yet split. There was a large white quartz stone at the circle's centre, also split into two pieces. It was surrounded by a number of modern offerings including a pure white oyster shell grown perfectly around two embedded pebbles, and a pretty smooth stone with circular white quartz banding.
The circle has a commanding view from the top of its hill overlooking the surrounding landscape and mountains. The pines surrounding it are new and block the circles view of a lake connected to the ocean close by.
Folks, these stones were BIG. many were as tall as me or even taller. The photos don't do their height justice as the grass at their base obscures another like two feet you can't see above the ground. GUH. MAJESTIC. BEAUTIFUL. POWERFUL. let me come back rn

gaeilge.gachla
Posts a new vocab word each day
the_gaeilge_coach
Secondary school Irish teacher, is a bit of craic, posts reels about learning Irish in a way that is fun and captures your attention. Her work is aimed at exams, so it is great for anyone doing state exams or applying to the Hibernia, because we are the target audience. She has a free pre-recorded masterclass for Higher level leaving cert (Ardleibhéal do na hArdteist) which comes with an online booklet with an exam lay out and so many more free resources for everyone, exam students or not on her website, which shows a lot more of the great stuff that she does, because I haven't even tried half of her amazing resources, I'm still making my way through them because of how wonderful they are!!!
Gaeilge_bheo
Irish teacher in Australia, has a word of the day inniative for vocab, makes videos just chatting away about different odd things as Gaeilge, so she is great for whether you want to get your couple or words (do cúpla focail) or if you want some immersion content. She also teaches you how to tell people to feck off in Irish which is always useful as well as being a down to earth, funny, normal human being
gaeilge_i_mo_chroi
Posts videos on pronunciation for each dialect and common mistakes as well as covering content form the basics to the tuiseal ginideach and she has recently published a books (leabhair) so if you are interested in giving a bit of monetary support to some of the wonderful women providing us with such great resources, why not get yourself a nice book out of it. Bonus: She has a YouTube channel where she gives more in depth explanations of harder topics.
maire_nichurraoin
Is Gaeilgeoir í le Gaeilge connemara (She is a native Irish speaker with Connemara Irish) She has such a happy bubbly personality, which puts a smile on your face in seconds. She posts everything speaking in Irish (*IMMERSION!!!*) but don't worry, she has English captions included in the video. Even if I wasn't leaning Irish, I would still follow her for how happy I always feel after watching one of her reels. Agus is amhránaí í freisin!!! (She's a singer too!!!)

A new viewpoint on antlers reveals the evolutionary history of deer (Cervidae, Mammalia)
fullview recommended!
something i've wanted to do for a while now. i've scoured the internet for something like this and can't find anything that compares all the different types of antlers together. except one recent study on their evolution, which is also very interesting on its own! i simplified it to provide a visual reference, while still trying to be scientifically accurate. some things differ between this and trophy scoring terminology like where the beam is and whatnot, so if something looks weird that's why.
small additional note, this study and others provide a lot of evidence that eld's deer should be in their own genus as it doesn't appear similar enough to barasingha and schomburgk's deer. however this doesn't seem to be adapted anywhere yet, so they're still in Rucervus for this guide.
