Techno fighting to preserve the ranch he's worked and lived on for years against the merciless march of civilization, and Phil and his sons being the herald of that civilization, going around and buying up all the land to develop and then resell. Could be the same premise as union-buster/lawyer Phil, with him being fascinated with this well educated cow poke who can stand toe to toe with him in verbal jousting and intellectual debate. Could still be early twentieth century as well, as this sort of thing was going on well into the 20s. Could even play later, 30s, factor in the Great Depression and how a lot of people lost their farms and ranches to the bank. If you really wanna make absolutely evil 3/4 SBI.
