The Sunless Mist is a name used to describe a shadowy presence lurking just out of sight from the average mind. It is an assortment of every dark thought, action, consequence and form of life, radiating in a midst of the most deprived and twisted our species has to offer. It is genderless in shape and form, yet physically it surges in the unfathomable pits of dark space high above the sun in a region spoken only in whisper by the few that have witnessed it in all of its seething mass and presence. It lurks ever so close to us, yet it doesn’t act to harm, for we already do that to ourselves. It serves as a shadowy balance between living and the horrors manifested from within the outer regions. While it does not approve of the voided beings, interest in halting their progress of destruction remains empty.

The Last Smile
"I just want to see her smile one last time…," Harry said as the last semblance of life left his dying body.
Sometime Before
"Mom, I don't want to go to that dumb birthday party!" Harry screamed at his mother from across the hall. Martha did not have time for this angsty teenager and his fits. "Harry, if you don't get down here this instant, I will take away your Xbox for a month!" she screamed back.
Harry looked at her in shock as if she had said something vastly profound. "you wouldn't," Harry asked his mom sheepishly. Martha knew she had won this battle. "yes, Harry, I would."
Ten minutes later, they were at Harry's dreaded cousin's birthday party, "Harry go bring Nelson his present and be nice!" Harry looked at his mother with disdain but did as he was told. "GOD WHY DO I HAVE TO BE HERE!" Harry screamed in his mind as he walked inside his uncle's home.
"Harry long time no see," exclaimed his uncle as Harry walked inside the house. Harry gave him a wry smile and handed the present to him, hoping he wouldn't ask him to bring it to Nelson. He did not get what he hoped for. Henry shook his head "no, no, I'm sure Nelson would be overjoyed if you were the one to bring him his gift," Henry told Harry as he gave him back the gift. Harry sighed in defeat and made what felt like the longest walk of his life to the pool house where Nelson and his friends were.
Knock Knock. Nelson opened the door, smiling smugly at his younger cousin. "Hey, dipshit, you and your whore of a mother better have gotten me something good," Nelson said to Harry. Harry ground his teeth tightly but kept his mouth shut. He knew that if he did anything about it that it would only hurt his mother.
"Yea, Nelson, of course, we did," said Harry. "I'll be the judge of that, but either way, I doubt your whore mother could make enough to get anything good" Harry's knuckles were white from the force he was using to keep from swinging at Nelson. "We tried our best I'm sure you will like it," Harry told Nelson with gritted teeth.
"Hmph," Nelson exclaimed as he sat down on his expensive leather chair. "Nelson was a jock he had muscles that made all the girls drool and all the boys jealous. His hair was a perfect shade of blond like the morning sun. He had shining white teeth with small freckles just off the right side of his mouth. Basically, he was perfect. But not only that, his parents were rich, and he loved showing it off." Nelson's room was nicer than Harry's entire house, with a chandelier hanging from the ceiling. A king-size bed in the corner. His own fridge stocked with everything from soda to beer. A pool table and every gaming system that was out. Harry looked in awe at all the things he wished he could have but knew never would.
Nelson looked up at Harry, who was goggling all his stuff. "If anything goes missing tonight, I know who to come to," Nelson says to Harry. "You know I wouldn't do that Nelson," Nelson shrugs and looks up at Harry with a gleam in his eye. "yea yea sure whatever you say dipshit."
As the party went on, Nelson and his friends got drunk and played dumb games while Harry tried to stay away from them, preferring to stick near his mother. "Harry wouldn't it be more fun out there with all your friends," said Martha. "Those aren't my friends, and you know it, mom. Why are we here all they do is look down on us. And all my so-called uncle does it look at you with lustful eyes". Martha was a beautiful lady; she had long black hair darker than midnight. Eyes so blue, it felt as if the ocean lay behind them and a body most women would kill for.
"Harry there, your family, your father would have wanted us to be here," Martha said. "No, he wouldn't have he hated it here he didn't get along with Henry" Harry spat his name like it was poison. "Your fathers gone now, and you don't talk to anyone anymore. I thought that being here might give you a chance to meet someone, maybe make a friend?" Martha says to Harry with worry in her eyes.
Harry paces back and forth for a bit before answering her. "Mom, I know you're trying to help. I know you're worried, but being here it's not helping. Seeing these people who are my so-called family laugh and joke about us is not helping! I mean, you know what they say about you, don't you? They call you a whore, mom!" Martha takes a deep breath and looks up at the ceiling fighting back the tears. She finally manages to say, "Harry, I don't care what they call me. They can call me whatever they want. I just want you to be happy," she says as tears roll down her face.
"Mom, if you want me to be happy, then let's leave this place," Harry says. "Ok, Harry, we can go home just let me go, say goodbye." "No, mom, I don't mean this party. I mean this town. There's nothing for us here; all that's left is pain. Let's leave and go somewhere new and start over where no one knows us." Harry's mom looks at him very seriously. "And that will make you happy, Harry," she says. "Mom, it's not just about me being happy; it's about you too; this place isn't good for us. We have to leave so we can both be happy," Harry says with a look much beyond his years. Martha takes a moment to look at her son's face then says "Ok, Harry, ok, but I have to get somethings taken care of first, but I agree something has to change,"
One month later
"Were finally doing it, Harry were finally leaving this place," Martha screams as the wind slaps her face as she races down the highway. Harry looks over at his mom, feeling happier than he's felt in a long time. "Yea, mom, we are, and it's gonna be great. I've always wanted to know what city life is like," Harry says, trying to speak loud enough so she can hear him. Martha is driving fast; she feels free for the first time in a long time. She is so happy she listened to her son, and the truth is that she wanted to leave, but she thought that staying was what was best for him.
Further down the road
"God, I'm so tired I knew I should have stopped at the rest stop, but if I don't get this delivery there on time, I'll lose my job. Come on, Jon, keep it together; you got this just think Emily and Jason they need you." said the exhausted truck driver.
"Mom, do you think dad would be happy with us right now," Harry asked with worried eyes. Martha stayed quiet for a moment after a little while; she looks over at him and says "Harry, if your father is looking down at us right now, then I can guarantee you that he is smiling at us and yelling about how we should have done this months ago." Harry looks up and starts to say something but stops. "Mom, look out!" Harry screams in terror.
Edging closer and closer
The truck driver is swaying now; he can't seem to keep his eyes open. "I'm so tired, but I gotta get this shipment there, or it'll be my ass on the line," he slurs barely audible. Those are the last words the truck driver ever says as he slams into a blue SUV on the freeway.
Martha looks at the road and jerks the car to the right trying to avoid the collision, but it is too little too late, and the truck slams into them.
Martha awakes, confused, and with pounding pain in her head. "What…what happened," Martha says with a hoarse voice. Everything that has just happened comes back Martha as she looks off to the side at Harry's bloodied face. "Harry! Harry!" Martha screams as she holds her bleeding son in her arms. "Harry, please! Please be ok! I need you to be ok!" she screams.
Harry looks up at his mother's face wondering why she is crying. "Mom, it's ok. It's ok. Everything will be ok. Just smile for me, mom. I promise we'll be happy once we get to the city." Harry says, barely audible. Harry thinks to himself, "I just want to see her smile one last time," those are Harry's last thoughts as he drifts off into the endless abyss.

Freedom
You think you have it but never do
You want it but never strive for it
You look for it but can’t see it
You ask about it, but no answer comes
You lie and say you don’t need it
You cry at night wishing for it
You smile and say you already have it
You frown knowing your wrong
You think maybe you’ll get it
You know you never will

Beautiful poem
The war is always beginning.
The rain will always come.
But the sun will always melt into the horizon
after a trying day and reward us with colours
of deep scarlet and violet.
A dripping sunset to end the chaos with.
Until tomorrow, again.

The Girl Off to the Side
March 17th, 2015, is the day my life changed. My name is Jason Stone, and as I said before, I can pinpoint the last regular day of my life exactly. I awoke early that day before even the world itself had stirred. I lay there just thinking about my life, wondering if I was doing everything right or if I had been doing things wrong.
Before I knew it, my mother was calling me down for breakfast. I grunted in displeasure and got up to get ready for school. I pulled a random shirt from my drawer and put on some old jeans. As I was leaving my room, I grabbed my jacket, looked in the mirror, and thought to myself today was going to be different, it was going to the day I changed things. It turns out someone else was going to change it for me.
As I walked downstairs, my pops told me to go out and feed the pigs. I looked at him and said, ok. He looked back at me said, “Jason, I wish it had been you.” I looked back at him and told him, “me too.” After that, I walked downstairs, grabbed the sandwich mom made me and left. My pops hated me; he blamed me for my sister’s death, and… so did I.
Before going to school, I gave the pigs their food, hopped into my truck, and drove to school. My school life was great; I was popular, and everyone liked me. I could have any girl I wanted a fact that many other male students envied. But none of that mattered to me, no, I wanted something more something better. I wanted to be somebody who that person is I don’t know, but I know it’s not who I am now, and I know that this town isn’t the place it’s going to happen.
So, I tried hard. I got straight A’s and was the star player on the football team even though I didn’t care about football at all. It was all just a distraction from the fact that I killed my sister.
Anything that made me forget about that was worthwhile. That’s where my best friend Ivan comes in, he’s hilarious and helps me forget about the crap in my life. Honestly, he’s the best part about this town without him I honestly don’t know where I would be.
If there’s anything I miss about my old life, it’s him. Anyway, let’s move on because this next part is important. It was the start of everything the beginning of my real life. It’s when I met “her” for the first time Aubrey Lancaster, the most beautiful girl in all existence. It was homeroom and our teacher Mr. Herber told us we had a new student, that’s when she walked in, she was beautiful; it was almost like she wasn’t real, but she was, and she was looking at me.
She had just moved to town and was the new girl in school, which was weird because there were only two months of school left. I didn’t care about all of that honestly; I could barely think at all she was mesmerizing. She was wearing a leather jacket with a blue flannel shirt and a black skirt with military boots. She had stark black hair and eyes the color of a vengeful storm.
Before I knew it, she was sitting next to me, and she was starring… at me. I didn’t know what to say, so I just didn’t say anything. The class went by so fast, and I never said a word to her, after class, she got up and left without a word even though she had been staring at me. I couldn’t make sense of it throughout the school day. I tried to talk to her, but every time I got close, it was like time slowed down, and I could never get close enough.
School ended, and I hadn’t gotten a single chance to talk with Aubrey I felt defeated, but I thought to myself there’s always tomorrow.
I decided not to think about it and just head to the arcade with my friends. Ivan was roasting me about how I was such a chicken, not being able to talk to her. I grabbed him and wrestled him to the ground we were laughing and yelling and having a great time.
Time went by quickly, and it was nine o’clock. I said later to the boys and left the arcade as I was walking to my care I felt like I was being watched, but I didn’t see anyone, so I shrugged it off and attributed it to the many energy drinks I had drunk.
Once I got into my care out the corner of my, I saw a figure move it was slender, but from what I had seen, it looked deformed the only thing I could make out was the color of its eyes the same as Aubrey’s eyes. The feeling of being watched intensified drastically, and I shook off the thought that it was Aubrey; it had to be just a trick of my imagination because that thing could never be Aubrey.
After all my big talk, I still hadn’t spoken to Aubrey, and it had been three days. Although I’ve never talked to her, she still stares at me throughout homeroom, but every time I try to speak to her, she never talks back. Even outside of class, every time I try to get close to her, that feeling of time slowing down starts, and I can’t even get close. At this point, I felt like I was going insane. I mean…is she... is she even real? No, she has to be real. I’ve seen other people talk to her and even my friends make fun of me about her.
I can’t take it anymore. I’m determined to talk to her… no matter what. The next day I’m committed to not let her out of my sight. During homeroom, I stare right back at her, and as soon as class ends, I follow her, and this time it’s working. She leads me down a hallway I had never been down before, which was impossible. I knew this school like the back of my hand.
Nevertheless, I had never been to this part of the school; she finally stopped walking once she had taken me to a classroom at the end of the mysterious hallway. Once inside, she walked to the middle of the classroom, turned around, and motioned for me to come closer.
As I started to get closer to her, she started to change, her arms dislocated and grew long and gangly her mouth unhinged from its socket and grew so large it could easily swallow me whole what’s worse is the rows and rows of shark-like teeth sharp and piercing. Her legs grew as well, and she was easily 8 feet tall. I couldn’t move. I was petrified; she hunched down over me, put her face directly in front of mine, and gutterly whispered, do you still think I’m pretty?
My mind went blank and next thing I knew I was in my room with my parents shaking me awake as soon as I saw them, I hugged them and cried for a long while too afraid to let go.
I didn’t go to school for a few days; after that, every time I thought about it, I felt like puking. Friends from school kept on texting and calling, but I didn’t respond, I was too afraid, and even if I could answer, I had no idea what I would say... Finally, a couple of my friends came to check on me.
My mom let them go up to my room where I was, and Ivan opened the door and tackled me to the ground yelling at me, asking where I had been. I laughed for what seemed like forever; it was the first time in days that I had felt like myself. My mom brought snacks, and we talked and made fun; no one pressured me about what was wrong. They just messed around with me, making me feel so much better.
As I was talking and laughing, something started to feel off. It was like something that hadn’t been there before just appeared, and I was the only one who seemed to notice. It was Aubrey out of what seemed like thin air she appeared, but no, I searched my memory, and she had also been there since the first night she came to town. Always watching silently from the side the nights I spent awake at night wondering what she was doing or why she wouldn’t talk to me, she had been right there next to me. I didn’t know how I never noticed I started to scream all my friends tried to calm me down but they couldn’t I started to yell at everyone to leave as I frantically tried to put distance between myself and that monster.
My mother ran up the stairs and told everyone to go. She stayed with me until I calmed down and had fallen asleep.
Later that night I woke with cold sweats I couldn’t stop having that nightmare I sat up in the dark and looked around to my horror she was still there. Before I could even breathe, she was sitting next to me. I wanted to run I tried to scream but I couldn’t I was frozen by what seemed to be a supernatural force.
She started to whisper in my ear. I don’t remember what she said, but I do remember what happened next. She got up and kneeled next to me and kissed me and I kissed her back it was like nothing I had ever felt before as soon as she stopped, I wanted more. Aubrey got up and smiled at me and shook her finger no, then disappeared into thin air.
The next day I went to school and was no longer afraid, as soon as I saw Aubrey, I ran up to her and gave her the biggest kiss she smiled up at me and had me follow her inside. As she was walking inside the school, she started to change her arms dislocated and grew long and gangly her mouth unhinged from its socket and grew so large with rows and rows of shark-like teeth sharp and piercing, and she was absolutely the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
When I looked into the school trophy case, I noticed that I had changed to, I smiled and laughed and looked at Aubrey I was happier than I had ever been and oh so very hungry.
