NAME: Luz Carrero Noceda GODLY PARENT: Hebe AFFILIATION: Arts and Crafts Attendant SPECIES: Demigod ABILITIES: Eternally youthful appearance, fast healing
Manny Noceda met her mom at a convention.
Both of them, actually! He met Hebe midway through college at Cosmicon in 2002 while in full Captain Avery cosplay and the two stayed in character together the entire day. When Luz was old enough to know the details, he described it as a whirlwind romance that spanned the entire weekend, and then a month later Luz was left in front of his apartment. He met Camila at the same convention six years later, this time with his young daughter in tow in a costume of her own.
Their romance had taken a little longer, but it was built stronger. Manny stayed wildly in love with Camila until the end of his days.
With her dad gone, Camila stepped up and took on the responsibility of raising Luz. Luz knew now what a monumental task it was; not only raising a demigod, but Luz. She never made it easy, but Camila never gave up on her. She never took the easy way out by leaving her at Camp Swynlake to grow up with the year-round kids. Every summer when she dropped Luz off at Camp Swynlake, it was with an express promise to write every day and to be the first one at the gate to pick Luz back up.
(They usually needed the extra time to convince Luz not to try and sneak out whatever magical being she’d gotten attached to that summer; up to and including a pegasi foal, several rainbow fish, a pig with a beard and a concerning understanding of human language, and even one year a giggling Vee.)
Each year, though, it got harder and harder for Luz to leave camp. She loved her Mama, more than anyone! But the mortal world just didn’t suit her. She pulled on her normal disguise like an ill-fitting jacket that came out every fall and shed it at the first opportunity. She longed for summer and for the chance to run free and learn things like combat instead of struggling through english class. Camila wanted Luz to go to college after high school, but after weeks of begging, Luz convinced her mom to let her take a gap year to work at the camp as a counselor instead. One year turned into two, and into three, and every time she visited her mom she promised she’d think about rejoining the mortal world again. But until she had a real reason to leave, Luz was staying right where she was.

"Fireworks!?" Luz squealed happily, dancing in place. Everything else sounded super cool too, and beautiful and thematic, but fireworks!!!!
Luz was a simple Bard; she hear big boom, she like.
"Al that sounds so amazing!" she said excitedly. "Is Nora a big Lord of the Rings fan, too?"
She'd seen Nora once or twice, but was always busy with a customer when she stopped in so they had never been properly introduced.

Luz laughed, only remembering to smother the boisterous sound at the last second. There was a reason she'd been banned from the Gravesfield Public Library no less than three times despite her love of the place.
(It had been an old building, perpetually stuck in the 90s thanks to the lack of funding, but it was just down the road from the fire house where her Papi had worked. She'd spent hours there during the summer, curled up in the aisles and reading whatever books she could get her tiny hands on. By the time Vee had come into their lives, Luz had been old enough to stay at home or help Mami out at the vet office, but she'd still snuck into the library with Vee a few times to get books on whatever topic the basilisk was curious about that they couldn't find on the internet.)
At the mention of her friend, Luz perked up. "Oh, you know Willow too?" She grinned. "No wonder I like your vibes!" She hopped up, tapping her hands on the table. "Say, I was on the way out for a study break snack. What say you join me and you tell me more about your song in a place I won't get booted out of for disorderly conduct?"
As if to prove Luz's point, the student librarian that was still hovering around gave them a warning look. Luz smiled at them, popping up one foot in a picture of innocence that would have made her sibling laugh out loud.

Amity sounded like woodwinds.
High, whistling flutes and a lower, soothing oboe. They seemed to chase each other in dizzying circles, floating higher and higher until suddenly crashing out with a discordant 'thweet'. But that was okay.
Luz had already heard her. And she wanted to hear more.
When Amity accepted her offer for coffee, Luz only barely resisted the urge to punch the air, sure she'd already made enough of a fool of herself. She did wiggle a bit on her toes, though, a wide smile on her face.
"Yes! That's perfect!" she said happily. "That gives me," Luz started, jogging towards the table Amity had pointed out at the beginning of their conversation, "enough time to buy my book, reread the chapter I was trying to reference, and then we'll be off!"
Luz held up the new copy of Good Witch Azura 4 up triumphantly, humming the Zelda trunk theme to the room before strolling back over to the desk. "This is actually my first time seeing the UK covers," she said excitedly. "They're gorgeous!"
She set the book down on the counter and grinned at Amity. "Ring me out, Hecate!"

While Eda was thinking, Luz had pulled out her phone and was recording the absolutely adorable interaction between Owlbert and Panini to show her Mami and Vee later. Mami worried about Panini a lot ever since Papi had died; that he wasn't getting enough stimulation, that if something went wrong with all the charms that kept him alive they wouldn't know in time, and most of all, that he was lonely. There were no other palismen in Gravesfield, and Owlbert was the first she had seen in Swynlake.
Panini curled around Owlbert on the ground happily, nuzzling the little owl with a content little rumble.
Camila was going to be so excited Panini had a friend. So much so she might be able to ignore the fact that Luz had wandered after said friend into the magical forest that surrounded the town.
Maybe. Hope springs eternal.
At the woman's question, Luz tilted her head back and smiled brightly at her. "Luz! Luz Carrero Noceda," she said. "What's yours?"

Reader, let it be stated for the record that if Al showed Luz his wedding pinterest board, he would immediately become about twenty times cooler than he already was in her eyes and she would follow him into hell.
But as Luz did not know this board existed, she could not ask.
She did light up at the mention of the Lord of the Rings, though. She was a fantasy girlie first and foremost, after all! She knew the Shire very well.
(Her papi had read the books to her as a kid, but only after trying to get her hooked on Cosmic Frontier like he and her mama were. Luz didn't quite have the same appreciation for Sci Fi at that age, but magical journeys of destiny? Baby Luz ate that up.)
"Ohemgee, yes," Luz said excitedly. "And in the fall, too? Al, that's so brilliant!" Luz quickly remembered that this was an actual wedding being planned for people she didn't know super well yet - she'd met Nora like... once? Maybe? - and not just a wedding for some Sims or her RP characters. "That's my unimportant opinion, though," she said with a laugh, raising her hands innocently. "Also factually correct, but still, just my opinion."

By the time Tony introduced himself, Luz had melted into her hands, cupping her chin and smiling with stars in her eyes. "Tony Rydinger, that is the most romantic thing I've ever heard in my life," Luz said with faux solemnity.
(Well, second most. Her parents still had 'Best Love Story' locked down tight in Luz's horrifically biased and correct opinion.)
Her smile quickly broke back through and she offered Tony her hand gladly. "Luz Carrero Noceda, at your service! I am not shit with drums and will do just about anything in service of true love!" She said this last bit dramatically, one hand pressed to her heart and the other reaching for the sky as if she were about to bemoan for poor Yorick.
This was when one of the student librarians shushed her, giving Luz a nasty look. She ducked into herself and whispered "Sorry" before looking back to Tony sheepishly. "Um, all of that to say if you need help with drums, I'm your gal," she offered.

Luz swore she saw sparkles frilly pink anime clouds around Amity as she explained how she'd gotten more people -- people Luz knew by name and reputation at least, if not more -- to read their favorite series. If she listened closely, she could hear the gramophone at the back playing 'Dreamweaver'.
She did not sigh longingly at the blushing goddess before her, but it was a near thing. To think, this whole time there was a fellow Azura fan so close!
Instead, she danced in place. "That's so amazing!" she said excitedly. "You gotta tell me how you pulled that off!" Luz gasped. "Maybe we can have an Azura book club now," she said breathlessly, squishing her hands against her cheeks as the thought made itself at home in her brain. A group of her peers, chilling in some cute cafe or hidden corner of the gorgeous castle that housed their campus, talking about fantasy books and sharing recommendations. Finally finding that feeling of belonging with like-minded fans somewhere outside of a convention hall.
Luz nearly melted in delight.
"When's your break?" she asked Amity, eyes bright and a wide smile on her lips. "I'm totally buying you lunch and you are telling me all your thoughts on the books!"

Luz had thought, for a frantic moment, that she had dropped Owlbert when she suddenly felt the palisman leave her palm. She was about to dive to catch him when she realized instead he'd just hopped off, and she let out a little sigh of relief.
And then Owlbert gave a little bow, and Luz's heart melted all over again.
"Awww, búhito," she cooed, cuddling Panini close to her chest so she wasn't tempted to reach out to pet Owlbert when he wasn't looking. "Is this a thank you? You're very welcome!"
Panini, perfectly content to let Luz squeeze him half to death, gave a sniffle in Owlbert's direction. He wiggled out of Luz's arms to roll onto the grass, and looked at the owl curiously. "Oh, that's right! You haven't seen any other palismen since Papi left the Boiling Isles, have you?" Luz asked Panini with a smile. "Owlbert, meet Panifilo. Panifilo, Owlbert!"
"He's totally harmless," Luz promised Owlbert's witch, although she was sure to keep a close eye on the two. She'd seen at her mom's old vet practice how quickly a first meeting between pets could go bad -- not that palismen were pets, but the same basic principle probably applied.
Panini sniffed Owlbert curiously for a few moments, then gave an excited grunt before licking Owlbert's cheek. "Aw, they're friends," Luz said with a smile, cupping her cheeks.
