400 words for thanksgiving

holy hell, ive been mia from Tumblr for like 3 years. i wrote this last night

The struggle of the oppressed is a longstanding trope the powerful wish us to forget. But we will not forget, can not forget. Imperialism, colonialism, slavery—disenfranchisement and displacement of peoples. Landscapes are changed in a plethora of ways; first people, diaspora, then the means in which survivors intend to survive. The world is flowing with water but your pocketbook dictates how safe it is to consume—FLINT.

For a nation built on the intangible of great and celebrates its values on days like this, falling short doesn’t even come close. There is nothing moral about pipelines pumping crude oil parallel to the jugular vein of civilization, rivers. There is no intelligence in jeopardizing the health, and shared water supply of millions of people and ecosystems alike. There is nothing superior in brutalizing a peaceful population, autonomous beings through law and land alike, for Christmas bonuses. There is no true power in the simple equation of profit over people.

Growing up I watched destruction on satellite TV, children throwing rocks at army tanks, smoke and rubble in the streets, people brutalized by men in uniform—I look at the local news now and see the same chaos but better contained, better guns, better tanks but the same scared expression of woman and child, dead bodies, and I can’t believe my eyes. The system is commercialized misery. Maybe America was never great, but now, it definitely has no other choice but to be.

This Thanksgiving, while we feast with family, basking in the warmth of the holidays and spend money we don’t have on things we don’t need, watching men in oversized pads grunting over a ball and giant balloon animals squeeze through city streets, the truth still exists in aftermath of all the confetti.

The truth: we live on stolen land, we are a broken people crippled by elitism, capitalism. Our taxes fund the grossest human rights abuses via proxy war and weapon sales. We are all depressed, we mass shoot each other or “enemy combatants” we are all patriots, we are all dying cogs in the American fantasy of “the dream”.

A Wiseman said the greatest struggle is that with the self and If we wish to change the world we have to start with our reflections, no easy task but there’s always a way to start.

This thanksgiving make your own dream; tell the truth, remember the story of the colonizers, don’t believe the myths work actively work against them, donate charities you believe in, be kind to your neighbors, go out of your way to give, speak up when you see shit going down, to feel thankful.

There’s a hadith in Saduq’s al-Tawhid about Imam Hassan (a) once praying in public and people walking by were told & scolded by his companions to walk behind him, so after finishing the Imam scolded his own companions to let people walk as they wish because nothing could possibly disturb him in sujood.
