"The Fault in Our Stars"
SETTING:
The book The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is set in modern-day Indianapolis, Indiana, and parts of the story take place in Amsterdam. The setting is important because it shows how teenagers like Hazel Grace and Augustus deal with their illnesses in today’s world, with all the medical treatments available. Hazel, for example, is alive because of a made- up drug called Phalanxifor, which makes the story possible since it gives her more time to live her life. The Amsterdam part is special because it’s where Hazel and Augustus go to meet an author they both like, and it feels like an adventure away from their normal, tough lives. This setting makes the story feel real and helps show what it’s like for teens living with serious illnesses today. The modern time also allows them to connect with other people, like through support groups or online, which is a big part of how they meet and grow close. Without this time and place, their story wouldn’t feel as believable or relatable.
SUMMERY:
At the beginning of The Fault in Our Stars, Hazel Grace is a 16-year-old girl who has cancer and spends most of her time at home. She has to carry around an oxygen tank to help her breathe because her lungs don’t work well. Hazel’s mom thinks she’s sad and needs to get out more, so she makes Hazel go to a cancer support group. Hazel doesn’t really like it and thinks it’s kind of boring, but she goes anyway to make her mom happy. One day at the group, Hazel meets a boy named Augustus Waters. He’s funny, confident, and really different from anyone Hazel has met before. Augustus had cancer too and lost his leg because of it, but now he’s okay. After the meeting, Augustus invites Hazel over to his house, and they start talking about their lives and favorite books. Hazel tells him about her favorite book, An Imperial Affliction, and he gets excited to read it. This is where their friendship begins. They end up getting really close from the author of that same book and even plan using Augustus wish to go visit where the author preforms. During their trip, Hazel and Augustus discover that the author is rude and doesn’t have the answers they hoped for. Even though that part of the trip is disappointing, they grow even closer and realize how much they mean to each other. But their happiness is short-lived when Augustus reveals that his cancer has returned and is terminal. As Hazel supports him through his final days, she learns how much love and being loved can change a person, even if life is short. The story shows the beauty and heartbreak of love, life, and loss, especially for people facing illness.
Characters:
Hazel Grace Lancaster (She believed shes a “grenade” whose death will hurt those around her. To protect others, she avoids forming deep relationships, especially will Augustus)
She starts off guarded and afraid of forming deep connections due to her terminal cancer. Meeting Augustus teaches her to embrace love and life, even with the risk of loss. By the end, she learns that pain is worth the joy of meaningful relationships.
Augustus waters (He wanted to live a life that will be remembered, fighting for significance through heroic actions. This drives many of his bold and dramatic decisions early in the story.)
He begins as a confident, charming cancer survivor seeking to leave a big legacy. Through Hazel, he realizes true significance lies in personal connections, not grand gestures. Helping him change, and he finds value in the quiet moments they shared.
THEME:
Love and connection give life meaning even in the face of suffering and loss.
Hazel reflects on Augustus impact after his death, realizing that their love was worth the pain, stating, “You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and i'm grateful for it. Augustus learns to value personal connections over grand gestures telling Hazel “Maybe ‘okay’ will be our ‘always’, showing off the beauty in their shared moments.
QUOTES:
“Some infinities are bigger than other infinities.” This reflects on the author by proving that some things that are meant to last forever but only last forever in the memory mean more then other things that actually do last
“That's the thing about pain, it demands to be felt.” The author shows in this that in life that some things are worth that pain and sometimes needed"
“You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world, but if you do have some say in who hurts you.”
The authors perspective on this shows that while we can't avoid pain, but we can choose who we let into our lives making love a choice despite its risks.
WHAT I TOOK FROM THE BOOK: I learned that love can cause lots of pain but if it's actually strong enough and despite its downs it's still possible. RATING: I would give it a five because I feel like it gave me a new perspective on love and on people that struggle with the same things and get past it all depending on how strong the feelings are one for another.
