BEFORE DAWN
He runs like a headless chicken in the thick forest. Thorns eat away some of his flesh but he does not even bother. He is breathing heavily looking behind him but does not see what is chasing him. He stops for a while all he could hear was the thud of his heart beat which sounded like a drum on the day of the full moon and Pungwe celebrations. The silence absorbed him to an extent that he began…

Mine is to change the narrative of beauty not only in the industry but in our country as well
Yaya Mwanda.
IF we could all wake up with the kind of outrageous energy and boldness that Yaya Mwanda does, the coffee industry would probably collapse and we could all be leaders of everything. I remember meeting her for the first time. She was  dominating the Africa Fashion International ramp which…

Ten years ago, most alpha males believed that armpit juice was all that was needed to attract a mate. But what’s wrong with wanting to be a smoother, fresher version of our original selves? Isn’t being happy and comfortable in our own skin the ultimate goal? Whether that means for you a baby smooth chest, a weekly mustache trim or an all-over golden tan, we say: go for it and Hines and Harley(H&H) is here to help you get it right. In this segment we going to explore how men can maintain good facial skin by the easy steps provided by H&H professionals. but first, who or what is H&H?
WHO IS HINES AND HARLEY?
Hines & Harley is Jared Hines’ dream come true. With more than a decade’s experience in the spa industry – in South Africa and abroad – he had long been looking for a place where men can be pampered, not as an afterthought but as the salon’s focus. “Eventually I decided to create such a place,” Jared Hines says. And that’s how Hines & Harley was born.
Hines and Harley
But, my curiosity was not quenched. As you read in my previous blog #MCM Mustache Bae, Jared Hines (JH) is the owner of H&H, (with the help from his colleagues) divulged more about this hub.
What inspired the name?
I did not want anything that was too personal as “Jared’s grooming hub” which came across as arrogant. It was until a friend suggested Hines and Harley, which is a combination of my wife and I’s surnames.
What type of grooming do you provide?
For now we provide hair and skin care. We also do massages. But we are still growing and we would like to in-cooperate all the aspects that will make men feel good in and after leaving this place. We created a space where men can come and relax out of this crazy world. Drinks, Wi-Fi, games and a comfortable lounging space.
The cozy lounging space
I understand you have been open for 3 years now? What have you seen change in terms of business?
Yes, we will be turning 4 this coming December. Its been a wonderful journey. I remember we only had only 2 bottles of whiskey to offer clients and today we offer a variety. This to me has acted as a significant symbol of where we come from. We had a tough start up where by we could only have clients that approximately injected R 5000 but to think of it rent and workers needed to be paid. it was strenuous but with tenacity and the consistent clientele our business has grown. We now have a family who really enjoy being pampered.
In one of your interviews you mentioned that all treatments are tailor-made, kindly elaborate. Everyone is different hence it would be unreasonable to use the same treatments for everyone. That’s why we have experts in hair, skin and the body so that we can provide the adequate treatments required by our clients. This is why we work with bookings instead of walk-ins so that we can prepare and give the client the best.
Who do you consider as clientele? We don’t have anyone specific. Anyone from the age of 3 to 70. As long they want to look and feel good.
What makes you different from other grooming hubs? Our client care and the quality of products are five star. If it is not five star then it is not good enough. We give you the value for your money and more. Also, our team is made up of qualified professionals. This guarantees you the accurate treatment you deserve.
Are you guys hiring or do you take interns? We don’t take untrained intern, but we upskill our staff members. If they come to us as somatologists then we offer apprenticeships in barbering. If they come to us from a hairstyling background, then we train them in relative fields like Indian head massage. We don’t accept unqualifieds, but we do allow third year somatology students to work on their hours with us. We also offer short course training for things like barbering, massage or waxing, but our students need to bring their own models to work on. Both myself (Terry) and Jared are trained assessors due to lecturing backgrounds.
So, H&H goes on to provide simple steps to get great skin. They highlight that these are the first steps to looking good.
They reveal some of the products that they use to accomplish the five star treatment.
” For our skin care use handmade natural products from Theravone (its a local product from Stellenbosch) used and proven. London grooming Company which is one of the international brands that they use alternatively with the Hines and Harley beard/shaving creams. The London Grooming Co is an international range that is growing steadily- they started off with beard and shave products and hair care, but they also do colognes and skincare. Their Pomade and Sea Salt Spray are huge sellers with us. Styling products are incredibly good. They have Oud in a lot of their products, which comes from extremely expensive Agar wood. So you could say it has a luxury signature scent. Hines and Harley beard/shaving creams that have been used and proven to be the ideal creams for the beard. They are made of 100% natural ingredients.
Cleansing No man ever won points for adulting by using the same bar of soap on his danglies and his face. Aside from not being clogged with nasties, a face wash designed specifically for your skin type will be PH-balanced to avoid leaving your skin feeling tight, uncomfortable or dry. Jared highlights that the more froth that comes from your face wash or soap the more it removes the healthy elements on your skin.  “Make sure your skin is supple after you use whatever face wash you using. DO NOT USE SOAP!” Jared says.  Though Tom Ford prescribes to the two-times-a-day school of grooming, outside of showering it’s not necessary to cleanse your face more than once a day – with the emphasis on a good scrub down to remove dirt and grime before bed.
H&H Tip: Don’t be scared of oil-based cleansers, they won’t cause spots or blackheads and are kinder to dry and mature skin types.
Exfoliating Every day the human body sheds around 50 million flakes of skin, the equivalent of around 0.03 and 0.09g of skin every hour. Which might be a different case for black or darker skin as it is more oilier, which means it is more prone to pimples but age better *wink wink*
(Sorry if you were eating.) This is important to keep your face looking fresh, however, the turnover of new cells decreases as we age, meaning we need to give the natural process a helping hand.
Exfoliation refers to the removal of the very top layer of the epidermis. The benefits of this include keeping pores clearer and blemishes at bay and making skin feel and look smoother. Cleansers often double up as exfoliants. These can be physical exfoliants like the grains of salt in a scrub, or chemical exfoliants like alpha hydroxy acid.
H&H Tip: Exfoliating every day can be harsh and ultimately counterproductive – once a week is ideal.
Moisturizing Unless you want to look like something found behind a crypt door, using a moisturizer is an essential part of the grooming routine. To start your day off right, leave the house with the skin protected against environmental aggressors such as sun and pollution – that means looking for formulas loaded with SPF and antioxidants.Energizing formulas can also help pep up tired looking skin and hide the evidence of nocturnal activity. After sundown, the skin enters repair mode, so boost its internal functions with a specific night cream or nourishing formula designed to promote cell renewal and stave off the signs of ageing.
H&H Tip: Adjust your routine for the seasons; upping the UV protection and using lighter gel/water-based textures in summer and layering on the hydration during the winter
In a nutshell, our skin lives and breathes, and knowing the best products for it to be healthy is a plus. As for gents it is difficult to find the right products for your face. Hines and Harley will give you the guide and the ideal treatment for your skin. They also provide makeup for men. Make sure you visit their website or their social media handles for booking and more information

For us it is all about the experience before, during and after the treatment. We view our treatments as therapy given by professionals. It is an exchange of energy that we respect by always bringing our best selves to the task.

When one thinks of leather, they think sexy, daring or edgy. Yeah, you might be right. Leather has managed to take different shapes and sizes for different purposes through generations, until the 21st century where it has become a fashion statement. In this segment i will focus mainly on the leather jackets, how they emanated and their various types. this will help us understand how to rock them. There is nothing fulfilling like confidently rocking an attire with a knowledge of the history and how it can influence your surroundings.
Tumblr media
Walking through the city of Johannesburg you realise most people have embraced the leather jacket trend. The smooth, bougie finish helps to highlight status and power. however, with a rich history that spans its incarnation from WWI to its presence among the present-day fashion set, it’s easy to see how this versatile closet-staple has retained its cool factor through it all.
How leather jackets came into fashion
During WWI, German fighter pilots were the first to sport the bomber silhouette as a protective outerwear layer of their military uniform, according to Mick Farren’s book, The Black Leather Jacket. So it is during this world WWII that they ended up naming them “Bomber Jackets”. It was not only pilots that wore them but even soldiers in the trenches adopted these as protective clothing. later in the 1950’s the designer Irving Schott designed the first motorcycle jacket and sold it at the Harley Davison shop for $5,50. According to the Jacket society In 1953 the leather motorcycle jacket reached iconic status after Marlon Brando wore it in the movie “The Wild One”.Soon after James Dean followed by wearing his famous leather jacket in “Rebel Without A Cause” making it the ultimate symbol of cool. Furthermore, in 1960’s this cool factor continued with Steve McQueen wearing his leather jacket with his famous aviator sunglasses.

“The Fonz” from Happy Days continued the tradition in 1970’s with wearing his famous leather jacket that is now on display at Smithsonian Institute. The 80’s brought the punk rock look with Blondie and Billy Idol decorating their leather jackets with studs and safety pins
Billy Idol in his decorated leather jacket.
Okay, we can go on and on about the history, at least now we can understand where the inspiration emanated from. This paves way to understand the different types of leather jackets and how they are traditionally won.
TYPES OF LEATHER JACKETS.
1. Biker Jacket
The bad boy of the outerwear world, the biker is a cropped leather jacket, usually in black, complete with studs and asymmetric zips. Originally worn, unsurprisingly, by motorcyclists, the asymmetric cut was designed as such to allow riders to lean over their bikes without the fastenings digging into the body.
Tumblr media
However this has been borrowed in the fashion world as it gives a bold-edgy look. It is also youthful and can be worn with slim fit jeans. If you bold enough, you can pull it over a good fitting shirt and slim fit trouser for the office. Whichever you go for, always ensure whatever is underneath is lightweight, because this style should be cut close to the body.
2. Bomber Jacket
It can be simply noticed through the consistency in its simple shape – a cropped body featuring a central zip and fitted waist and cuffs – it can be rendered in anything from shiny nylon to, as is in this case, soft, supple leather. It is safest pairing it with raw denim and a simple white T-shirt or chambray shirt.
Tumblr media
3. Racer Jacket
Aside from the military and sportswear, one of fashion biggest influences is the automotive world – driving shoes, ribbed-knee jeans et al. Bring the two together and wrap them in leather and what you have is the racer jacket.
Tumblr media
“This one’s easy to wear and flatters the body,” says Thornton. “It’s great for showcasing broad shoulders, or you can opt for a thicker leather if you have more of a slight body shape to accentuate what you don’t have.”
4. Flight Jacket
Arguably the daddy of all leather jackets, as the name suggests, the flight jacket was originally created for pilots. Bulky, and with a shearling lining for warmth, today it’s a statement investment piece for both airmen and stylish civilians alike.
Tumblr media
To stay cool in more ways than one, ensure you don’t go overboard with the layering. Keep it simple and contemporary with plain trousers and a light gauge knit or T-shirt. “Balance the weight of the jacket by making sure the rest of your outfit is slim-fit and tailored,” says Thornton. In a nutshell, a leather jacket is an essential in one’s wardrobe. It never goes out of fashion and you guaranteed to have one for decades. Tag me on your pictures to show me how you rock your leather jackets.
LEATHER Jacket : Reasons why you need to get one. When one thinks of leather, they think sexy, daring or edgy. Yeah, you might be right. Leather has managed to take different shapes and sizes for different purposes through generations, until the 21st century where it has become a fashion statement.
