People on here really only want to hear about ukraine in the context of comparing to other conflicts, with the implication that it's less bad, even though cities with populations in the hundreds of thousands have been razed to the ground and whole villages executed and buried in unmarked mass graves in forests. Wanted to write a post about detention camps and systemic sexual violence and torture in occupied territories, but i could see a montage in my mind of only my ukrainian mutuals engaging with it and idiots writing me their thinkpieces on why what I'm writing about either A) didn't happen or B) happened but it's good, so i just white knuckled and gave up, nvm.

I see the “Why did Buffy have to get a shitty service industry job to pay the bills - Giles is clearly getting paid handsomely by the watcher’s council and she’s doing most of the actual work as the slayer?” point and I get it I do but I raise you that this is entirely intentional and you’re supposed to ask this. From S1 Buffy is told slaying isn’t a job, it’s not something she can quit, she can’t demand better rights or equal pay, it’s a duty, it’s an obligation, it’s an expectation. I think the comparison to the unpaid and oft unappreciated physical and mental labour women are expected to perform from childhood is pretty clear - the household chores and management that women and girls are expected to do uncompensated on top of work and study (and if they’re lucky, having a personal life). Buffy should be paid to be the slayer. And she also shouldn’t have to be the slayer. And housewives should get paid to clean dishes and the one woman in the grimy student flat should get paid to pick up the slack for her male flatmates and the girls whose parents work full time who have to be mini-mom to their brothers from age 5 should get paid - and also none of them should have to do any of that. I don’t think it’s confusing that the obvious allegory for the patriarchy doesn’t pay Buffy for her obvious allegory for women’s labour. I think that is one of the core points actually.

Oh, okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that gaslight gatekeep girlboss meme, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you think modern feminism has been co-opted by corporations. But what you don’t know is that that meme is not from Instagram, it's not from Twitter, it's not from Tiktok, it’s actually from Tumblr. You’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in January 2021, Tumblr user missnumber1111 posted, "today's agenda: gaslight gatekeep and most importantly girlboss." And then I think it was a-m-e-t-h-y-s-t-r-o-s-e, wasn’t it, who reblogged it with an image of the phrase edited over a piece of "Live, Laugh, Love" wall art? And then gaslight gatekeep girlboss showed up in the feeds of eight different Twitter repost accounts. Then it filtered down through Instagram and then trickled on down into some tragic “alt side of Tiktok” where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that meme represents millions of notes and countless Tumblr users and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from Tumblr when, in fact, you’re wearing the meme that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of “stuff.”

Let's have a story, shall we?

Centuries ago, an indigenous people with millennia old deep cultural ties to their land are occupied and colonised and ethnically cleansed by various empires, forced into worldwide diaspora, where they suffer constant persecution, oppression, and genocide.

Finally after hundreds of years of this, and after suffering one of the worst genocides in human history, which annihilated two thirds of their population, they regain control and sovereignty over their land.

Fast forward another few decades. A woman, born and raised on her people's land, able to freely practice her culture and traditions, proud of her people and how they have endured, decides to go to a music festival with her friends. Young, happy, full of life, excited for her future.

And then, a violent militia group comprised of descendants of her ancestor's colonisers, a group whose sole aim is the complete removal of the indigenous people from their lands, rampages through the festival, and she is brutally raped and murdered, along with hundreds of others, and her body is dumped like trash. This atrocity ignites a worldwide movement blaming her and her people for their own deaths, and celebrates her rapists and murderers as "courageous freedom fighters."

Sounds utterly appalling, doesn't it? Beyond comprehension.

If your revulsion at this story changes when you learn the woman was an Israeli Jew, you are an antisemite, and there is no trying to argue your way out of it.

And this is why I post what I post every day. Because there is a monstrous injustice happening and people have to shout from the rooftops about it.
