I've sacrificed so much of my life for this art form, and sometimes I need a little reminder of why I do this.. To witness @mollsgrayy & @jarredbosch dancing together was a beautiful experience. Thank you @zandrat99 & @alysonthomas for another amazing GAIN Intensive. Happy 53rd day of dancing to me! I think I've fell in love again. ❤️🙏🏽😩🤔 (at Dayton International Airport)

Yes, we had a champagne, (grape juice), toast to bring in the competition season. You darn right we had a pep rally to celebrate the dancers hard work. But these kids are also some of the hardest working humans I know. I don't know any athlete that spends 15+ hours a week for most of the year, every year for 15+ years training their bodies. To my Kitty Lee babies. I'm so proud of the beautiful artists you have become. Good luck this weekend at competition. From the great words of Beyoncé.... "Stay gracious, the best revenge is you paper." (or trophies) 👑😽

Myke Brown unknowingly released Say Nothing, on March 7th, the very day I moved to the east coast. The Universe has been throwing bones like this all week. Here’s an example: One day, I was taking my bike to the shop to get the tires aired up in hopes of selling it on craigslist to make a few extra bucks before the move.  As I pull out of the parking garage, there was a NY baseball cap just sitting on top of the bushes. I stopped and stared at it, coming up with all of the possible ways to kill the game in NYC. When I came back it was gone. I knew it was a sign that I’m headed in the right direction.
This cover reminds me to let my heart be the guide and enjoy the ride. As a matter of fact, I use to take long rides at night to bask in LA’s beautiful energy. It asks the question, when you look out the window what do you see? A bunch of stuff to prove? Or proof that power is all around you.
The abundance of opportunity this city brings has opened my life to movie material experiences. I've traveled the world, partied with rock stars, danced with some of the greatest in our time, shared the big screen, slept on couches, in mansions, failed, conquered, all while, losing and finding myself many times. LA is where I found inspiring artists like Myke Brown. A place where I learned how to make what seemed impossible, a reality. What better way to move on to this next adventure then with sharing one of my favorite creative moments in Los Angeles.
You ain’t gotta say nothing, but thank you Myke Brown for allowing me to be apart of your work. I hope you get lots of play from the radio and the ladies with this record.

This piece takes me back to my angsty 14 year old self, when I first started choreographing. I would “dub” songs from the radio onto a cassette late at night, (the only time radio stations in Oklahoma would play r&b and hip hop), to make a 2-sided mixtape I could listen to on my bike rides, just trying to escape from the world.  I would study all of the beats, instruments, lyrics, background harmonies, runs, and ad-libs, rewinding the tape over and over again on that one part I couldn’t get. At the time, I was only training in Graham, Horton, and Ballet technique, so a lot of my work reflected this. Imagine a Graham inspired jazz piece to Brandy’s “U Don’t Know Me” from her 1998 Never Say Never album. Shits hilarious now that I think about it.
It could be my own hang-ups, but sometimes choreographing for competitive studios makes it hard to create from the gut--where you find the good stuff. Choreographing on instincts alone, not recycled movement, I’m talking authenticity, requires dancers to be open and willing to try new vocabulary, to go with the flow and make magic happen with me rather than me working my ass off to keep them inspired. These days, if it’s not trendy, on youtube, or typical formulated nonsense to get the “win”, dancers are extremely resistant, and resistance in the creative process is just exhausting.
But…
My Spotlight bunnies let me be me. They’re commitment to the process brought out the adventurous, authentic, and soulful side of me in this piece. I had a lot of fun and I think it shows up in the choreography.
To Mrs. Winnette McGovern and the beautiful dancers at Spotlight Studio of Dance, thank you for always inspiring me! Good luck to you this weekend!
Mama D is cheering for you.

What I enjoyed about creating this piece was coming up with staging that would speak to the audience and movement that filled up all of the spaces in the music. Although at times a lot is going on, there are still human elements that gives the work a mixture of depth and simplicity. I think it’s one of those pieces that will grow with every performance. There’s so many directions you could go with this as a performer.
It is always a pleasure working with the dancers at Kim Massay Dance Productions. They are extremely hard workers and humble as hell. My Oklahoma PEOPLE!

Modern Conceptions of Dance will always be some of my favorite dancers. They are constantly working hard at the studio. I'm talking 10 to 13 hour rehearsal days. They are the sweetest and most respectful students, and they have a passion to be the best. Not to mention, they always make sure I'm fed some of New Orleans best food! Thank you Mrs. Heather for sharing your brilliant artists with me, and taking care of my work. Your belief in me as a choreographer means the world to me. ❤️ "Believe" Star System's Highest Scoring Group Ultimate Achievement Award Tori Gifford-Teen Miss Dance Kiki Lucia-Senior Miss Dance Tyson Ford-Teen Mr. Dance Star Systems, Mobile, Alabama Modern Conceptions of Dance Director: Heather Nuckley
