IT ALL BEGINS WITH AN OCEAN MEDALLION™ The complimentary Ocean Medallion is your portal to amazing vacation possibilities. It’s the size of a quarter and can be worn in a variety of ways: as a wristband, pendant, clip or even in your pocket. . Each Medallion is connected to a specific guest—it has your name carved into it—and interacts with 7,000 sensors connected by 72 miles of cable and distributed throughout the ship's 19 decks. All that tech tracks where you are, what you're doing, and what you might want to do next. . Medallions work in conjunction with something Carnival calls the Ocean Compass, a network of 55-inch high-res screens—4,000 in all—that provide personalized recommendations. Want a margarita? How about a massage? It's right there on the screen. . The experience aspires not just to deliver on your expressed intent, but anticipate it. A small example: As you walk toward your room, sensors detect your approach. By the time you arrive, the lights are on and the air conditioner is cooling the room to your preferred temperature. . OCEAN MEDALLION PREVIEW — NOW ON REGAL PRINCESS® . Select guests on Regal Princess will enjoy several new Ocean Medallion enhancements including MedallionNet™ Wi-Fi, the renovated Port Everglades terminal in Ft. Lauderdale and new gaming and entertainment experiences, such as a new Sail Away Celebration. During the preview cruise period, we will activate Ocean Medallion features by groups of staterooms in phases throughout 2018. . Developed by Princess' parent company Carnival Corp., the wearable discs that serve as room keys, onboard charge cards and virtual concierges were unveiled on Regal Princess in November 2017 to a select number of passengers as part of a preview period that will run through spring 2018. The technology was due to launch on Royal Princess January 2018. . Princess confirmed the delay, but said the preview period on Regal Princess is still expected to run through spring 2018. The line added that the new Ocean Medallion roll out would be announced after the technology is fully activated on Regal Princess.

The city of Dubrovnik (Latin: Ragusa) was built on maritime trade. In the Middle Ages it became the only city-state in the Adriatic to rival Venice. Supported by its wealth and skilled diplomacy, the city achieved a remarkable level of development during the 15th and 16th centuries. Furthermore, Dubrovnik was one of the centres of the development of the Croatian language and literature, home to many notable poets, playwrights, painters, mathematicians, physicists and other scholars. . Today Dubrovnik is the proudest feather in Croatia's tourist cap, an elite destination and one of the most beautiful towns in the Mediterranean. Dubrovnik used to be an independent republic, surviving mostly on trade. It managed to survive many centuries, with constant threats to its territory, particularly from the mighty Ottoman Empire and Venice. As early as 19th century, it was discovered by celebrities as a place to be seen. George Bernard Shaw once said that "those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik and find it". Royalty, presidents and diplomats have all favoured the city. The late Pope John Paul II was a fan of Dubrovnik and was even made an honorary citizen. Out of the 23 top luxury hotels in Croatia in 2010, a dozen were located in Dubrovnik. . Dubrovnik is steeped in stunning architecture and sculptural detail, and boasts spectacular churches, monasteries, museums, and fountains. A multitude of typical towns and excursions include: The Elaphiti Islands, the attractive town of Cavtat, the Konavle valley, Mljet Island, Korčula Island, Ston and Peljesac Peninsula. The neighbouring towns of Kotor and Perast in Montenegro or Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina also make for intrigiuing day trips. . Video credit: @expedia @dubrovnikcablecar

Castillo San Felipe del Morro also known as Fuerte San Felipe del Morro or Castillo del Morro, is a 16th-century citadel located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. . Lying on the northwestern-most point of the islet of Old San Juan, Castillo San Felipe del Morro is named in honor of King Philip II of Spain. . The fortification, also referred to as el Morro or 'the promontory,' was designed to guard the entrance to the San Juan Bay, and defend the Spanish colonial port city of San Juan from seaborne enemies. In 1983, the citadel was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations in conjunction with the San Juan National Historic Site. . Over two million visitors a year explore the castillo, making it one of Puerto Rico's leading tourist attractions. Facing the structure, on the opposite side of the bay, a smaller fortification known as El Cañuelo complemented the castillo's defense of the entrance to the bay. In 1961, the United States Army officially retired from El Morro. . The "fort" became a part of the National Park Service to be preserved as museums. In 1983, the Castillo and the city walls were declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations. In honor of the Quincentennial of the voyages of Columbus in 1992 the exterior esplanade was cleared of palm trees that had been planted by the U.S. Army in the Fort Brooke era, and restored to the open appearance this "field-of-fire" for El Morro's cannon would have had in colonial Spanish times. . Parking lots and paved roads were also removed, and the El Morro lighthouse repaired and restored to its original appearance. El Morro was used as a film set in the 1996 motion picture Amistad. Steven Spielberg used it to represent a fort in Sierra Leone where African slaves were auctioned in 1839. African slave labor was used in addition to local labor to help build the castillo. . El Morro was a defensive military fortification and a major component of San Juan's harbor defense system. Puerto Rico as such was considered by the Spanish crown as the "Key to the Antilles"; no enemy ship could navigate its waters without fear of capture. . This is one of my favorite places in the world.

Did you know that the birth of leisure cruising began with the formation of the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company in 1822? . The company started out as a shipping line with routes between England and the Iberian Peninsula, adopting the name Peninsular Steam Navigation Company. It won its first contract to deliver mail in 1837. In 1840, it began mail delivery to Alexandria, Egypt, via Gibraltar and Malta. . The company was incorporated by Royal Charter the same year, becoming the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. . P&O first introduced passenger cruising services in 1844, advertising sea tours to destinations such as Gibraltar, Malta and Athens, sailing from Southampton. . The forerunner of modern cruise holidays, these voyages were the first of their kind, and P&O Cruises has been recognized as the world's oldest cruise line. . The company later introduced round trips to destinations such as Alexandria and Constantinople. It underwent a period of rapid expansion in the latter half of the 19th century, commissioning larger and more luxurious ships to serve the steadily expanding market. . Notable ships of the era include the SS Ravenna built in 1880, which became the first ship to be built with a total steel superstructure, and the SS Valetta built in 1889, which was the first ship to use electric lights. . The first vessel built exclusively for luxury cruising, was Prinzessin Victoria Luise of Germany, designed by Albert Ballin, general manager of Hamburg-America Line. The ship was completed in 1900. . The practice of luxury cruising made steady inroads on the more established market for transatlantic crossings. In the competition for passengers, ocean liners added luxuries — Titanic being the most famous example — such as fine dining, luxury services, and staterooms with finer appointments. . Did you know that The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift in Scotland, connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal? . The lift is named after the town it resides in of Falkirk in central Scotland. It opened in 2002, reconnecting the two canals for the first time since the 1930s as part of the Millennium Link project. . The wheel raises boats by 24 metres (79 ft), but the Union Canal is still 11 metres (36 ft) higher than the aqueduct which meets the wheel. Boats must also pass through a pair of locks between the top of the wheel and the Union Canal. The Falkirk Wheel is the only rotating boat lift of its kind in the world, and one of two working boat lifts in the United Kingdom, the other being the Anderton Boat Lift. . Each of the two caissons is 6.5 metres (21 ft) wide, and can hold up to four 20-metre-long (66 ft) canal boats. . A visitor centre is located on the east side of the lower basin. Boat trips on the wheel depart approximately once an hour. Since the wheel opened, around 4.4 million people have visited and 1.3 million have taken a boat trip, with around 400,000 people visiting the wheel annually. . How genious is that? . . Norwegian officials have given the green light to fully finance what is set to become the world’s first full-scale ship tunnel. . Stad Ship Tunnel will be 1.7 kilometres long, 37 metres high and 26.5 metres wide, and it will be able to allow ships the size of Coastal Steamer (Hurtigruten) ships to navigate more safely through the very exposed Stadhavet Sea. The project will at the earliest start in 2019. . Construction of the Stad Ship Tunnel, which would be able to accommodate cruise and freight ships weighing up to 16,000 tonnes, is expected to open in 2023. . CONSTRUCTION: . Conventional blasting is envisaged using underground drilling rigs and pallet rigs. Work on alternative solutions, including the establishment of a new commercial area, is taking place locally. . Under the plan, passenger traffic will be given priority but leisure boats and other vessels can also use the tunnel. . It will be free of charge for vessels measuring less than 70 metres, and vessels longer than that would have to be led. . Vessels sailing through the tunnel likely will get slot times from a traffic centre — like planes at an airport — to avoid congestion. . In addition to providing a safer route for sailors, the tunnel is also expected to serve as a popular tourist attraction with the potential for an overhead bridge that will be open to the public. . KEY FIGURES: . Length: 1700 metres. . Height between ground and ceiling: 50 metres. . Width between tunnel walls: 36 metres. Hight from sea surface to ceiling: 33 metres . Cross-sectional area: 1661 m2. . Volume of solid rock to be removed: Approx. 3 million m3. Equivalent to approximately 8 million tonnes of blasted rock. . Total costs: Approx. NOK 2,7 billion ($417 million). . Construction time: Approx. 3-4 years. . Video credit:@guardian
