Hello! If you don’t mind telling, what size did you draw the sprites of your characters in?
I’m just asking because I’m drawing sprites and I just wanted some advice
You know, I’ve gotten this question a lot. I mean a LOT A LOT. And it is beginning to dawn on me.... that not everyone loves math x’D
I’ll admit it- I’m a weird nerd. Especially about math. I’ve always loved math. Even as a little kid, I found math class soothing. Even to the point of begging teachers to let me take both math classes offered in grade 5 instead of learning french [ I got my way too lmao ] >_>;;;
But yeah- the sprite size thing is answered almost entirely by math x’D
So please, step into the sweaty nerd zone with me.
First, you’ll need the size of your game. This determines everything. If you don’t know how big your game is, you gotta find out! The height of your game is the most important number for this.
Next, we need to decide on a height that looks good for sprites. By using some little estimating tricks above, I’ve determined that a sprite seems to look quite nice when it takes up around 85% of the vertical screen space [ the height ].
Style tips: If you think you’d like the sprite to have less space between the top of their head and the top of the game, maybe 90 or 95% percent would be better for you. I personally find that sprites ‘taller’ that 95% of the game height tend to look wrong- unless you’re doing it on purpose for only certain characters to accentuate a feeling of tallness. In that case, a sprite may even be cut off by the top of the game. Every rule can be broken if you have a good reason!
The percentage height of screen space that a sprite will take up is probably going to remain roughly the same- even if you’re drawing different styles of sprites.
Style tips: Choosing where you cut off the bottom of a sprite is really important! The more you draw of a character’s body, the further away they will feel. If you cut off a sprite at the knees for instance, your character will feel like they’re standing a nice, respectful distance away. You may also be able to fit more characters in the screen with sprite like that.
Doing your math:
So, once you’ve got the size of your game [ and most importantly, the height ] all you have to do is multiply that by the percentage of screen height you’d like your sprites to take up to get the ideal height for your sprites.
If my game was 720px tall for instance, I could multiply that by 0.85 and get 612px for my ‘ideal sprite height’.
Tricks to make things easier:
Personally, I like to make art canvases exactly twice the size of my game. That way, I can draw a sprite on the canvas as if it were the game- and end up with a sprite that’s twice as big as I need.
Why bother with that? Because shrinking images is ALWAYS better than blowing them up for quality, and I can shrink my sprites according to my needs. If I want to make a sprite seem like it’s getting closer, I can just shrink my already made sprite a bit less than normal and cut off more of the bottom. I also have wiggle room for adjusting heights if I need to.
Lastly, you’re gonna have to do a bit of old fashioned guess-and-check. A good way to save yourself future trouble is to start with some test sprites. Just scribble a basic outline of your character down and export it. See how well that works in your game before you commit to serious art.
Good Luck! ^o^
