I have the worst time setting boundaries with people. And, I suffer. It's like I have been conditioned to be nice all the time which means saying 'Yes' to everything—even when I don't want to. It just rips me apart to say 'No' to someone. But, it has caused me so much pain. And, needless to say I have invited assholes to treat me like a doormat. Few days back, in one of my guided meditation sessions, this phrase moved a lot of things inside me—saying 'No' to others means saying 'Yes' to yourself. People like me always worry about the other person's feelings over theirs. 'Oh I must not say this, she might feel bad'—we often hold back our own thoughts and feelings—thinking that we are being nice and polite. But, what about us? If we don't take care of ourselves, then who would? And that's why boundaries are necessary. Self-care starts with setting and reinforcing boundaries that make you feel comfortable. Otherwise, you will always have trouble forming healthy relationships. In the past few days, I have established some really hard boundaries with people who were driving me crazy. And man, did it help. I feel more calm, in control, and less anxious while interacting with them. Umm... what do I say about this picture! I have never been fond of watercolours because I never knew how to handle them. Well, till date I don't know how to. That's why some spill here and there. But then, I received this watercolour set from @itsybitsy Initially, I did struggle a bit, as you might have seen in my Instagram stories. I still do, but lesser. When the struggle was over, I ended up developing a liking for this medium. I think that's because these watercolours are of fairly high quality and pigmented than the ones I have used before. My brother asked me to create this piece and it turned out just beautiful. This is the 'Mool Mantra' for the Sikhs written in a soothing calligraphy style with hand-drawn illustrations. Most of us have been raised to believe that certain stuff like marriage, education, and children should happen at a certain age in your life. And because of our conditioning we never ask WHY? Most of the time, when we’re being too hard on ourselves, we do it because we’re driven by a desire to excel and do everything right, all the time. This entails a lot of self-criticism, and that persecutory inner voice that constantly tells us how we could’ve done things better is a hallmark of perfectionism. This can also be triggred by society's expectations of you, which you have imagined in your mind or are made to think. Acknowledge that it’s bad for you; beating yourself up over everything that does not go as planned. Practice self-kindness. Whenever you start beating yourself up, take a moment and ask yourself — Will I ever say these harsh things to a friend of mine? Remember, you are enough just the way you are. All you have to do is work on yourself by practicing self-love. I hope you find some answers @aaniya_s ___

I have a small personal story to share with this post. When I was in school, I enjoyed drawing but was always made to feel that I was not good at it. When I was 6 years old, we were asked to draw a sunflower for homework. When I submitted my work, the teacher said that it was not good enough because the petals weren't accurate. And by accurate, she meant drawn with a compass-like accurate. And, I had hand-drawn those. So, she gave me a poor grade. When my mother saw my copy, she asked why? So, I explained it to her (and believed that I sucked). And she said, "The teacher is an idiot. Not even natural flowers have accurate petals. Each one is different from the other. How can she expect that?"
 My mother was a biology teacher with amazing drawing skills. It made a lot of sense to me and I did not take my teacher's feedback to the heart. But, I started hating drawing as a subject. That's because of the number of files and sheets we were asked to submit—it was humungous. And, most of the drawings didn't interest me. So, I would draw only one sheet (the drawing which excited me the most) for submission for the entire year. But, I made sure that it'd be the best one from my end. So, while other students submitted around thirty sheets, I submitted one. I definitely received a lot of backlash from the teachers. Although, they did appreciate that one single sheet of drawing 😅 . Sometimes I would listen and sometimes I would paste sheets of friends in my files to getaway. This experience ruined my idea of drawing even though I had lots of fun doing it, and I was pretty good at it. So, when I was learning to draw portraits yesterday on @skillshare, the teacher said that you should not worry about the exact features of the person. You should capture the essence. And, throughout the process she enforced this practice. It was liberating and so much fun. I recalled that story from when I was 6 years old and was glad that I did not take the teacher's feedback. I wanted to share this with all those who struggle to make their work perfect or like someone else's. Forget about it. Have some fun and be proud of what you create. This is a Bible verse which I did for a customer. The brief was straight-forward—simple with a burst of colour here and there.
