Has anyone else ever gotten so deep into fanfic of something that it's kinda ruined the ability to watch the actual property for you? That's happened to me with She-Ra: Princess of Power and Legend of Korra. I think it's because they didn't actually have the relationships become a thing until like....the very last episodes and I've enjoyed so many fics of what their life together is like that I don't really want to go back to before that again.

Aleister’s younger self would knowingly nod. Of course he would still be with Gwen! But….why does she have rabbit ears now?

Dahkar would be thoroughly surprised, since as a boy he and his mother were the only au ra around. He knows from his mother’s stories there are more out there but they always seemed so far away. Older Dahkar isn’t telling him about the others he and Yugiri occasionally share their bed with tho. Best to let younger Dahkar discover that on his own.

Younger Fearless would absolutely burst into tears. She has not one, but TWO girlfriends? She escaped from her parents and their attempts to marry her off to some son of a business partner? This is all she ever wanted but thought she would never have. The weeping for joy will only increase when she finds out that her older self is a master of two magical disciplines. It means she’s not as stupid and useless as her parents have called her.

Rheika refuses to learn conjury out of hatred for the Hearers and the Padjals, blaming them for not doing enough to curb their city-state's systemic racism to anyone they perceive as "non-forestborn", including Keepers of the Moon. Dahkar refuses to have anything to do with anything Magitek related. You couldn't pay him enough gil to join the machinists guild or take up the gunblade, much less show up in Solution 9, like EVER. He just hates it, he knows it's irrational, but he does. Being on an airship is the limit of what he'll accept for interacting with it, and even that is through gritted teeth. Fearless believed that any form of magic was beyond her "limited understanding" thanks to years of mental abuse from her parents, but then she became one of the greatest Astrologians on Etheirys, later becoming a Black Mage. Now that she's gained the confidence from having mastered more intellectual disciplines I think she'd probably not want to ever pick up any more physical ones, because she spent so long being told that her size or her looks were all she would be good for. Aleister is far too reserved to ever be a bard or a dancer, but he'd be absolutely fine learning anything else.

I see posts go by periodically about how modern audiences are impatient or unwilling to trust the creator. And I agree that that's true. What the posts almost never mention, though, is that this didn't happen in a vacuum. Audiences have had their patience and trust beaten out of them by the popular media of the past few decades.

J J Abrams is famous for making stories that raise questions he never figures out how to answer. He's also the guy with some weird story about a present he never opened and how that's better than presents you open--failing to see that there's a difference between choosing not to open a present and being forbidden from opening one.

You've got lengthy media franchises where installments undo character development or satisfying resolutions from previous installments. Worse, there are media franchises with "trilogies" that are weird slap fights between the makers of each installment.

You've got wildly popular TV shows that end so poorly and unsatisfyingly that no one speaks of them again.

On top of that, a lot of the media actively punishes people for engaging thoughtfully with it. Creators panic and change their stories if the audience properly reacts to foreshadowing. Emotional parts of storytelling are trampled by jokes. Shocking the audience has become the go to, rather than providing a solid story.

Of course audiences have gotten cynical and untrusting! Of course they're unwilling to form their own expectations of what's coming! Of course they make the worst assumptions based on what's in front of them! The media they've been consuming has trained them well.
