The Doctor is and has always been sexualityless except for Twelve who was RiverSongSexual. I'm aware this is a polarizing opinion but this is my truth.

they definitely have a fandom and most of those stories are probably just fanfiction about them
With River and the Doctor it's always "There are stories about us, you know" "there are rumours about this". Who started those rumours? Where did they find them? I like to imagine that there's someone out there who devoted their life to collecting stories about those two time travelling idiots.

great question, op, i can try to clear this up for you
melody's brainwashing in her childhood consists mostly of conditioning her into believing that his murder would be justified because he's a monster with no regard for the safety of the universe, that killing him will undo the damage he's done
when melody escapes, still very young, she finds her parents and surprise: amy has met this doctor and an encounter even that brief seemed to change her life forever, amy was basically obsessed with the man. this in a way even solidifies melody's perception of the doctor as this great manipulator but she still spends many years listening to amy telling her how awesome and funny the raggedy doctor was
so when she finally meets him instead of a smooth and calculating killing machine he turns out to be a boy who can barely control his own limbs, who blushes when she flirts with him and who runs to comfort her when she's dying despite meeting her like half an hour ago.
then after she's poisoned him, he finds her, but not to get revenge - to make sure she's safe. he doesn't blame her for what she's done and keeps looking at her like she's an old friend.
melody watches him die and is perplexed: he's minutes away from death and yet can't ignore a cry for help from his friends, he's not mad about dying, he's frustrated he doesn't have enough strength to help. this goes against everything melody has been taught.
and then he asks her for help, he begs her to do the right thing and save them
finally when she finds out about river song she's faced with the first real choice in her life: leave him be and carry on being a disposable tool in the hands of her captors or break free from the conditioning and do the right thing, make the first step towards becoming the person the doctor seems to think so highly of
of course she doesn't love him at this point, she's not saving him for him, she's doing it for herself. she'll have many years worth of dates and adventures to fall in love with him.
the line in the end when she says she's "looking for a good man" isn't 'haha she wants a dude', she's looking for the truth, for what hides beneath legends, speculations and fairytales
tldr: he showed her that she had a choice to become her own person and be loved and she took it, moffat haters just can't be bothered to pick up on obvious things when they're not said out loud
I do not get river song's character arc you know cause like this person has been RAISED and BRAINWASHED to hate the doctor and to believe that what he does is WRONG. HOW TF does she change her mind so quick that she starts loving him like how. WHY does she love himmm it's NEVER shown. It's just clever kips and suggestive winks and dramatic love confessions but never any substance.
Pl explain to me and i don't mean this offensively yk I'm genuinely confused why they chose to write it like that

“This whole transplant situation, the new staff, my 4 year old daughter, it’s helped me to see things more clearly. Mark’s gone, so many of my friends are gone. Thers’s no reason to stay. Not for me, not for Ella. I suppose i’ve known that for a long time now but, it’s uh, it’s hard to move on, isn’t it? It’s hard to close that chapter, several.”
