The 1st Half of S1: It Was Good, but Not Great

As is to be expected from a show that was on a 7-year hiatus. It’ll take a bit for the writers to get into the flow of the show, and settle in on a style that fits.

The first few episodes showed this pretty thoroughly in that they felt a little like they were attempting to emulate the humor of the previous seasons. In my opinion, this made some of the humor in the first couple episodes not flow naturally, and feel a little stilted, that’s just my opinion though.

As time went on, though, it felt like the writers settled in a little bit more. However, most of the episodes to me felt “good” but not “great”. What I mean to say is that I was entertained, but not laughing out loud at a lot of the jokes, unlike many of the episodes in previous seasons.

Before we dig deeper into a couple more of my issues (which I don’t think ruin the show, by the way) let me just say what I liked:

-Many of the jokes did hit for me, while most didn’t get me to laugh out loud, they did earn a chuckle, and it was an overall enjoyable experience.

-They improved some writing issues in previous seasons such as a lack of sincerity when it came to character development, and said character development not sticking as much as it should

-there was more of a focus on the Watterson family and their dynamic, which I think will help patch up some loose ends in earlier seasons

-the characters felt kinder (btw, I actually liked Gumball’s sarcastic and mean humor, and really enjoyed it, but I think this makes him a little easier to root for). While Gumball is still a bit of an ass, he feels more similar to season 3 or 4 Gumball: a kindhearted, sarcastic, idiot.

-“Have you tried cleansing your chakras?” “No, we’re not allowed to use the sprinklers for that anymore.”

-more focus on the romantic relationships. It felt like in previous seasons, the boy’s girlfriends seemed to be very background, and were only mentioned when relevant to the plot. However, in this season, they are mentioned many times over, as if they are actually a part of the boy’s lives. I also liked how there were multiple focus episodes on them (though I’m not a big fan of how two of them were handled)

Anyway, there are more things, but those are just the specific ones I could think of. Now onto some issues I had.

-The ending of “The Letter”

Frankly, I was expecting an ending where Darwin told Carrie he loved her, and she realized how much she appreciated that. What I was NOT expecting, however, was a really, REALLY cringe incest bit. Yeah…I really hated that joke. Having Carrie possess Gumball and kiss Darwin was unfunny and frankly unnecessary. I find this to be a recurring issue within cartoons for some reason.

It was just kind of icky (not to mention, Gumball did NOT consent to that. Plus it felt like the scene realized it was weird and was trying to rewrite itself in real time. Clunky). And also pretty stupid. We’ve seen Carrie kiss Darwin before, and I feel like it would have been just as, if not more, impactful than what they went with. That kiss just spoiled the scene for me. I’ve never been a fan of the incest jokes, and I’m not starting now. Speaking of incest jokes:

-The Distance.

In my opinion, this episode isn’t as bad as The Letter’s kiss scene, as it leans more into dumb bromance, like calling your friend your boyfriend as a joke. Having said that, still a super cringe episode (not in the good way). It was a pretty uncomfortable viewing experience, and even without the odd incest bits, it had a pretty contrived plot as well. The show has done this same kind of concept (with the break up jokes and all) 10 times better in earlier episodes, AND without any incest jokes. This episode had a pretty dumb misunderstanding plot point that, in all honesty, hardly made sense to me.

There was also hardly any conclusion to the internet friend plot point. Just a throwaway line and a gag. Probably the worst episode in the season so far.

-The Amadain

I wasn’t a big fan of how they characterized Penny in this episode. She was behaving like kind of a jerk, and I don’t think she got the backlash she deserved for that. I think it would be an interesting mid-season plot point to have Gumball actually stay pissed at her, and REFUSE to go to her house ever again.

I would’ve definitely liked it better had they just scrapped the line about the whole thing being a prank. Not cool, Penny.

Overall, despite my criticisms, I have faith for the show going forward, and I think the season was pretty good. Can’t wait for a void episode.
