“There is no love between any two souls greater than that which exists between the spouses.”
—
Ibn Kathīr [Tafsīr 3/474]
فلا ألفة بين روحين أَعْظَمُ مِمَّا بَيْنَ الزَّوْجَيْنِ
ابن كثير، تفسير ط العلمية ٣/٤٧٤

and what happens when those two souls are soulmates themselves? two souls that were created for one another? one body created from the ribs of another? so when one of them says, “i miss you”, it is because the other is a missing part of them; and when the other says “i miss you”, it is because the other is still missing the feeling of the rib belonging to the other’s body; and when one of them says, “i love you”, it is because they were once part of the body that shared the same heart; and when the other says, “i love you” it is because they see what just a part of them became, and they recognize themselves in them and find comfort in them due to it; and perhaps no two souls have to be identical in every way to be soulmates; how can they be identical if one was created from the other’s rib, and thus the concave portion of one’s rib is no longer the same as the other’s; rather perhaps because one was created from the other, they know each other’s texture so well just as they know the texture of their own skin; they know the parts of themselves that are deficient, just as they know how the other is deficient, and together they know how to complete one another because one’s strength is the other’s weakness; and one’s weakness is the other’s strength; and the only weakness they both share in common is that they are weak for one another; and the strength they share is that no matter what the other has done they will never give up on one another; isn’t that what soulmates are? perhaps soulmates are not always the lovey-dovey scenes of individuals who deeply gaze into each other’s eyes, but perhaps soulmates are sometimes one who holds the barf bag while looking into the other’s eyes to make sure they know you are still there for them at their worst moments; perhaps it is not just holding hands in public, but holding onto the other’s good attributes when the other’s flaws come out; perhaps that is what soulmates are; perhaps it is not always to bring the other out on a date, but rather to bring out the best of each other; to help the other achieve their dreams and aspirations; perhaps that is what soulmates are; perhaps that is what soulmates are; perhaps it is not being able to find any rhythm that sounds more beautiful than the sound of their voice; not being able to get enough of the sound of their laughter that if you could you would record it and leave it on repeat for the entire day while you are absent from them; perhaps it is their sense of humour that blends so amazing with yours; perhaps it is that in their absence your eyes become a sahārah desert, thirsty for just a glimpse of their beauty, and when you finally see them, the floodgates open at each reunion; perhaps it is that you never become stagnant; perhaps it is their ocean full of knowledge and you are privileged to be just a rowboat floating on it; perhaps it is that they show the rest of the world they are the lifeless moon, wrapped in the blackest of nights, but for you they expose their true colours; perhaps it is because your goals align; your destinations as well as the pit stops in between; that they want you in the journey; whether it is to spend a day in a 5-star hotel on the days you can be spoiled, or the cockroach crawling motel to spend the night, or it is just the backseat of the car because that’s the only place to call home for the night; perhaps you are soulmates because it is not the pitstop that matters but that both of you are there; perhaps that is what soulmates are; perhaps they are your soulmate because they were once in another part of the planet and the gravitational pull you felt for them is just as strong as when you are now next to them; and perhaps it was a singularity; a gravitational pull from a black-hole so powerful that it cut through space-time, just to pull you closer to your future together in half the moments it would have taken; perhaps that is what soulmates are like; perhaps they are your soulmate because their names used to be in your mouth every time your forehead kissed the earth; every time two-thirds of the night passed, the thought of them was strong enough to tear your eyelids open just for a single supplication; perhaps that is what soulmates are; that is what soulmates are; perhaps they are your soulmate because of how deeply they understand you; how despite the millions of wavelengths at the different frequencies, they have found a way to match the velocity of yours; perhaps that is what soulmates are like; that they understand you; not who you are but who you were; and thus who you will become one day; they have an intuition, and they want to be the one who takes you there; perhaps that is what soulmates are like; that they read between your lines, and between the lines that are between the lines; that they have studied your speech and thought patterns and they recognize the moment anything changed; that they can understand the moment you leave out one word that you would have used; the moment you use words that are unusual or outside of your context; isn’t that what soulmates are? those who can appreciate you on every level; of the things that you have been through, and that which you are; fully; not just on the surface level; but they can appreciate you as a whole; someone in awe of you; they can decipher every encryption in your words, destructure every metaphor, every simile in your wordings; isn’t that what soulmates are? those with whom you have no secrets, because they are skilled enough to discover your unspoken thoughts; how can you have secrets when they know the way you think? isn’t that what soulmates are? your greatest foe; the one you are constantly in competition with to be a better you; because they are you; and you are them; because what harms you harms them; and what harms them harms you; and you being better, means them being better; and them being better means you will be better; perhaps that is what soulmates are; your greatest foe; the one you always want to be a step ahead of; your soulmate; the one you never want to stop impressing; the same way you crave their attention a decade ago, is the same way you would crave it when you are in your sixties; isn’t that what soulmates are? the ones you daydream of being an old couple with; of holding their hand, walking at turtle speeds just to go sit on a bench to reminisce decades of your life together; isn’t that what soulmates are? isn’t that what soulmates are? perhaps that is what soulmates are…

if the impurity is not removed from the cup, regardless of the sweetest tasting beverage that was poured in, no one would dare drinking out of it; nor would the excess liquid in the cup wash away that impurity that now has spread through the cup such that it is no longer confined in just one place; perhaps it is the same with us; the filth that we held in our chests; the insincerity; the love of the dunyā; the fascination we have of a toxic celebrity influencer culture; the love of leadership and power; the lust after the opposite sex in all of its forms; if none of these are first removed and the heart is not purified; if the whiteboard is not erased and washed from every trace of the permanent marker; regardless of what is written on top of it, and the scratches, and the scribbles to mark out what was once there, it will always remain underneath it all; and perhaps that impurity will spread across whatever medium you have splashed upon it, until it has blended itself into whatever liquid you mixed it with; until you can no longer tell the difference; and whatever beverage you thought you were consuming that is pure, is in reality mixed with that same impurity that never left.

Repentance is not by mere speech."

“O my brothers beware of Dunyā for indeed its magic is worse than that of Hārūt and Mārut (two angels) for they two (angels) separated a man from his wife while Dunyā separates a slave from his Lord.”
