I don’t want to make being an independent artist sound like some kind of hipster elitist exploit, people can enjoy what they want popular or not, but I do have a personal issue with how media is distributed in such a way that boxes consumers in and kills any urge to seek out more. In that situation popular content is absolutely my enemy. The goddamned walls that form popular media keep everything else out and ultimately you get a system based on what’s “marketable” which is in turn based on conditioning audiences to be partial to pre-existing content and forming a confirmation bias against newcomers and outlier material for being unable to sell or even survive in a media market when that market has been tweaked to do just that.
