I love the song ‘Into the Night.’ It’s Roy Orbison meets David Lynch meets Iggy Pop on amphetamines. It has a punk edge that is not HIM, per se. It is super melodic and super '60s, and that is very new to me and it is a sense of achievement to me.

Living in this world, it fucks with your sense of self, because elevating this persona is something that is much needed. It’s part of the rock and roll thing that you are put on a pedestal, and you have to put yourself on a pedestal. Ville Valo

After successful cooperations with artists like Nina Hagen, Sandra Nasic (Guano Apes) or Linda Sunblad (Lambretta) the Finns of Apocalyptica have now had the idea for a very special line-up for their single Bittersweet. No-one less than Ville Valo (HIM) and Lauri Ylönen (The Rasmus) visited their cello-playing country mates in the studio to assist them with their charismatic voices.
“This is the first time we’ve made a real cooperation, as Lauri and Ville wrote the lyrics and Eicca the music, while all the other times before the singers only interpreted our instrumentals”, says Paavo Lötjönen, one of the three cello-maniacs.
“We’d been thinking about this for 5 years already, but both singers were always too busy. We’ve known Ville for a long time because we always hang out in the same bars and he was singing a track at one of our shows in 1996. Lauri didn’t want to do something like this before the international career of The Rasmus was up and running, so now it was the right time.”
There were also good reasons for their decision to ask two men to sing a duet, and not to cliché-like present Ville with a female singer. Paavo explains:
“The initial plan was that both Lauri and Ville would sing one song each on the upcoming album. But when Ville heard that Lauri will take part too, he suggested the duet.
We thought this would be a good idea, as apart from Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder we only knew duets with men and women. Still Lauri will sing alone on another song on the album. It is called “Life Burns” and is the only other track with vocals on the album.”
In order to promote such a special cooperation accordingly, there was need for a good video too, for which they found a producer with a known reputation.
“The video was made by Antti Jokinen who works in Hollywood and has worked before with Korn and Shania Twain. When he heard that we’re going to record a song with Ville and Lauri, he was absolutely keen to make the video for it. In the video, Ville and Lauri are singing to the same woman. Only that Ville could have her, but doesn’t want her anymore, and Lauri wants her, but she isn’t interested in him. The video is very dark with a lot of elements of Finnish mythology, spiritual signs and black magic.
In some scenes we can be seen in marshland and in other moments we’re hanging on the ceiling playing the cello. During the shoot we were pulled up and had to play upside-down. That was very exciting.”

Love’s screaming ‘I will be the end of you!’ And I’m pleading ‘Don’t you stop now. Go on and tear me apart. Show me all you have got. And I will be so free from all that has been.’

Love is the force in my life. It’s the easiest thing to write about as well, because I experience it as universal as the same time it’s personal. When it happens, it happens and you don’t have to think so much. Your jaw drops to the ground, your knees are shaking, the colors around you change, the tastes change… Everybody knows what it’s like at its best. And it doesn’t have to go much further. Love doesn’t need to be fulfilled, so to say, to be a magnificent experience. Ville Valo
