Jess feels like Charlotte Bronte penned this story just for her, an awkward middle schooler in 2014. Jane is proported to be plain, but in the way that girls in books are, where they sort of aren't, with a thin frame and mousy hair and cleverness and determination. Jess is purported to be plain, in the way that girls in real life are, with glasses and braces and too-long limbs and an ill-advised pixie cut.
