nicky hemmick blames himself for andrew being put on the medication. let’s frame the scene:

nicky’s young, he finally feels like he belongs in germany and he’s met the love of his life. finally, finally it feels like God has forgiven him. but then the call comes. tilda is dead, and holy shit aaron has a twin. a small part of him says to forget he ever learned this, to stay in the utopia that germany provided. he knows though that if his father managed to ruin anyone else he would never forgive himself.

so, he comes back. he tells himself that he doesn’t resent the twins for putting a hold on his life (but maybe he does-) and he finds himself in hell. he’s working day and night to barely scrape by, he has to deal with aaron getting clean and andrew’s aggression and these two traumatized teens that don’t forgive themselves let alone each other. nicky hemmick wants to die. he’s spread so thin his smiles get wider and his laughs get louder, and every night for the measly hours he gets he cries and wishes he was dead.

it’s a horrible thing to wish for your own death, especially when people are dependent on you. he is all these twins has, and nicky feels so guilty but he works so hard for barely any appreciation that he feels like he can’t go on.

then that night at eden comes. nicky sees the men before they see him. he could have left in time. he didn’t. they stalk over to him and all nicky can think is finally, all he can think is God has come to punish me

he taunts them. he knows he shouldn’t, but when they swing their fists at him it feels like relief. if he dies like this he dies innocent, a victim. this is his way out (but what about my kids- no, they’d understand.)

when nicky wakes up he’s scared. that was supposed to be the end, the way out but now he’s in pain and andrew’s in jail and everything has fallen apart all over again

the guilt when andrew receives his sentence nearly pulls him apart. everyone tells him it’s not his fault but he wants to scream yes it is

in his guilt he convinces himself that the pills do andrew good. he’s happy now, more talkative. the truth comes out at thanksgiving and nicky wants to die (again and again it never ends)

he never tells anyone. he’s scared of what andrew would do if he found out he willingly picked the fight

(andrew knows. he saw the whole thing from afar and started running after the first punch. he knows what it’s like to want to die. he also knows what it’s like to be saved by someone who loves you)

in honor of july 7th being ap score release day, i’d like to share how i wrote my entire synthesis essay about neil josten and managed to get a 5. i had to describe the scene where andrew and neil were making out and neil got a countdown text that he ignored. some poor english teacher had to sit down and read my essay yapping about neil jostens psyche and still gave me a 5. i didn’t want to write making out so i described what they were doing as “engaging in romantic activities”. i got away with analysing smut. absolute legends

ok earlier i gave my funny headcanon as to why neil and andrew would get married early but here’s a slightly more serious one: the moriyamas need proof that neil isn’t a flight risk anymore. sure, he promised his income in exchange for his lives but his ties with stuart and the fbi make ichirou not the most trusting of him. there isn’t much guaranteeing that neil wont pull a runaway stunt again like his mother, so as a show of good faith neil gets married to andrew. not only does it ground him, tie him down and leave a paper trail for neil josten, he’s also willingly showing the moriyamas a weakness, proving to them that he won’t leave because he has something he’s too afraid to lose

if i can add something, yes, they did have a basic ass courthouse ceremony. their one witness was kevin. he did not know he was going to be the witness. neil asked him if he wanted to go on a run, and he got slightly suspicious when andrew appeared with the car but neil told him andrew was taking them to a new location. so kevin is in his jogging outfit when they pull up to the courthouse. he’s confused but neil says they need to sort out a parking ticket really quick before. they go in and all of a sudden neil and andrew are getting married?!? the poor official is trying to get through the procedure but kevin is squawking like a chicken because what do you mean you’re getting married and im in my jogging sweats

after the ceremony neil and andrew have to listen to him rant for an hour about what is appropriate and what isn’t appropriate to wear to your wedding (neil you’re lucky i didn’t object you were wearing neon orange shorts)

they do go on a run after though and even andrew joins so kevin is satisfied and doesn’t blab. he really doesn’t care enough to, it just means neil’s exy career is even more guaranteed and he will play for the usa team in the olympics

that’s how, to the shock and horror of everyone else, andreil ends up being the first married in their early 20s
