there’s just some things about doctor who that bring the doctor’s character to a screeching halt and signal quite simply the reminder that the showrunners do get their cheque from the british broadcasting corporation. a list:

1. colonialism metaphors. it’s almost always a three part argument that’s like a) the colonialists have been here for so long b) they will proceed to do better c) forgive and move forward. the doctor gritting their teeth and believing violence is never the answer means the last part is a given. and yet it’s this premise and narrative over and over.

2. the framing of war. the thing is so many war structures are written like wars for dominance as if we’re still in the anglo french wars or smth. the nature of war in the present world is wildly different. wars for resources, proxy wars, wars of annexation. wars wherein forces are unevenly matched. the case to be made is that war is devastating — and that case should be made without flattening every war into a handwavy approximation of a versus b.

3. on that note, the idea that foot soldiers are blameless. the whole danny pink as a foil to the doctor arc. what a shitshow. the doctor detests soldiers BECAUSE he was one. because he knows he can turn into one. and danny pink killed a middle eastern child but he sent that child back from the netherworld so he’s a good man? sadly, in the real world, that is not an option. no redemption for militaries.

4. winston churchill. yes, i suppose the doctor would be buddies with the man who engineered multiple famines across the indian subcontinent. among other crimes. like, i get it. i get that this is a british show. but cmooooon.

5. the fact that there’s a race of aliens out there who like to be invaded. and the doctor has cause to be disgusted by them.

6. portrayal of revolutionary action. like, everything the doctor says in the zygon inversion is right. but it’s always the radicals are trying to blow up 3 bajillion people route. fwiw, the doctor asks what happens in the perfect world to dissidents and it’s such a small minded dialogue. revolutionaries have always known that action is continuous. go read a book. challenge the doctor’s pacifist ideals in more interesting ways.

The Weeping Angels are really scary until you realize if any organism sees them they are fucked so they get hard countered by geckos, who don't blink and can see in the dark. If the Doctor strapped like two geckos onto him he'd be fine.
