So i know the general agreement is that ethel sings thoroughfare to cope with the fact that isaiah kidnapped and abused her but i think there is something infinitely more insidious about a charming, well mannered man who manipulates this girl into falling in love with him and doesnt decide to show his true colors until they reach california. A lonely man longing for love taking a young woman on road trip through rural america, stopping off at the odd motel and eating at diners. Sounds like the beginning of a romance novel. Until they reach california, and the moment isaiah is certain they can disappear, he turns into a monster. That to me is so much more evil than some jackass in a pickup kidnapping a girl.
