Sorry, I was just going to reply but this got too long, haha. There's probably (certainly) more to it, but I think a good ending, for me at least, is one that brings a closure (or sometimes lack thereof) that is consistent with the themes, tone and buildup tone previously presented. That's not to say it can't subvert expectations of those things, but when it's done for its own sake, it can often feel more annoying than anything.

For example, I won't say the title to avoid spoiling the movie, but there was this horror movie I watched last year that was themed around survivor's guilt and unprocessed trauma. In the end, the protagonist completed her arc by facing her trauma and succeeding, yet the movie pulled a twist at the last second, where she still ended up dying and the monster surviving. Now, this would have been fine if the movie had the tone of a tragedy meant to tell the tale of someone that, unfortunately, was unable to process their trauma. But the execution doesn't feel like that. It feels shock value for its own sake, and that devalues the whole story for me.

In terms of stuff I have been really into that have had good endings, while not recent, there was The Terror, a supernatural horror/drama show about a real, lost expedition to the Arctic on the 19th century, for which the used as much Inuit accounts as possible. There's also the book Piranesi, a book about a man who lives in another world, made entirely off halls, vestibules, rooms, and stairs like if the entire universe was an interminable house or mansion. There was also Alan Wake 2 last year. I won't explain what it's about because it's best not spoiled, but while it didn't bring the whole story to a close since they are planning a 3rd game, it did feel like an appropriate and fulfilling ending.

But I sure understand the disappointment of something I was super obsessed with ending badly. From Naruto doing dirty to most of its cast and its best villain to Star Wars IX being a soulless, made by committee mess. It's why nowadays I mostly focus on finished projects rather than ongoing ones. Well, that and the fact that anything good can still get canceled before it has a proper ending. I really hope we can both find something we can really get into that leaves us satisfied all the way through.

thinking about the people who vanished without a trace. The mutual who reblogged something as usual and never came back online. The friend on discord who just disappeared, and when you go to check on them their account is deleted and theres no other way to contact them
