imo a big difference between brian slade & jack fairy is how “lived in” their respective images are. brian’s hair and makeup and clothes are constantly in flux, adjusted based on the currents of his stardom rather than a fixed sense of his own identity. there’s an element of uncertainty in his presentation that’s likely related to how he sees himself Primarily as a performer, a performance, and is manifesting that more than anything else. whereas jack’s presentation is ultimately…sort of practical and steady, within the confines of glam. like for all the attention drawn to jack’s “outrageous” fashion, it’s actually not that outrageous — just femme and a bit vintage for the 70s (think 1920s-40s starlets). jack has the same haircut for the entire film, the same makeup, and we see them repeating pieces and owning several sensible black sweaters because this is An Everyday Thing they’ve been doing for years rather than a projection made onstage or in magazine shoots. it’s an aesthetic but it’s also their life, with adjustments and simplifications made accordingly.

It’s funny how beautiful people look when they’re walking out the door.
