just did a bit of research and wanted to add that the amount of land burned in australia right now (10,000,000 hectares/38610 square miles/100,000 square kilometres) is larger in size than 90 different countries, and is compareable to the size of the united kingdom. so yeah. have a great day!

couldn’t have said it better myself. please PLEASE, take a few minutes and a couple of dollars to donate to the RSPCA, CFA (Victorian Country Fire Authority), RFS (New South Wales Rural Fire Sevice), Red Cross Australia or Foodbank Australia. here, you can’t walk into a shop without being asked if you’d like to donate to that store’s fire relief drive at least twice. EVERYWHERE is collecting, and everyone is giving, but we need more help. can you imagine how many billions of dollars will be required to give what little help we can in restoring an estimated 10 MILLION hectares of bush land? we are doing our best to rescue animals but those who survive don’t even have anywhere to go. schools during their summer holidays are being opened up and converted into rehabilitation centres to keep animals at because there is literally just no bush to take them back to. and this is not even going into the property lost, the livelihoods and homes destroyed. imagine the feeling of being set adrift because everything you own, your home, is gone. you are portable now. the fires are so ferocious that they’re causing dry lightning storms and tornados literally made of flame that are strong enough to flip fire trucks with people inside. until their miraculous evacuation by navy vessel recently, the citizens of the coastal victorian town of mallacoota were forced to load into the boats of their neighbours and flee out into the ocean to avoid the fires that were closing in on their small town from further inland. the air quality in sydney has been at consistently dangerous levels for weeks, and at times new zealand, a country over 4 thousand kilometres away, has been blanketed in our smoke to the extent that visibility has been so poor it was unsafe to drive. please, you may be on the other side of the world, we may be remote and isolated and just that big weird empty island on the peripheral of the news. but we are not empty, and we are doing our best but we need more help than we have right now to fight our fires and to help those who have lost everything to them.

This is only the beginning. Our country has not only entered a new decade, it seems a new dawning era as well, because this flaming apocalypse doesn't show any sign of stopping any time soon.

And you know what saddens me? I've never seen Australian tragedies trending here on this website. I mean it's been going on for months and only now does it seem to really be getting recognized, even if it is only at #9.

And I'm going to be honest with you here - the internet, and media in general is so American centric, this website being no exception. You'd think that an entire continent being on fire for several months with devastating consequences would have more recognition, but no, it really doesn't. The most notes I've ever seen on a post about the Australian fires is at least a few thousand, and that's about it.

So just... please. If you can, with this post or any other post in regards to the fires going on down here, reblog. Because the only thing that should be spreading like wildfire, is a post about a burning country...
