Post series Viktor gets a lil less pale because he spends most of his time with Jayce, who spends as much time as possible in the sun after everything.

Having been traumatized by the cold as a kid and then the dark by the ravine, Jayce is in the sun from dawn to dusk almost everyday. Viktor, who spent his childhood in the dark of the Undercity and then most of his adulthood in a lab, comes to appreciate it's warmth more than he had before.

It's less to do with the sun itself and more the way it seems to melt away the stress and panic Jayce doesn't realize he carries when the sun is gone. Viktor does his best to imitate it when it's gone, making sure to keep Jayce warm and chase away the dark of nightmares. He doesn't feel as effective as the star, but Viktor doesn't realize he himself melts away a different kind anxiety Jayce has when Viktor isn't around.

It takes quite a few severe sunburns, but eventually Viktor finds the best way to share the sun with his partner. Jayce feels like the sun never really leaves, because once the one in the sky leaves there's still one from Zaun there beside him.

Viktor blinks once, twice, and then slowly opens his eyes.

“This is not my bedroom.”

Jayce barks out a laugh. All the built up tension and anxiety spilling out of him as he reaches for Viktor’s hand, clutching it tight. He wipes a tear from his eye, from his laughing fit or relief he doesn’t know, it doesn’t matter. Viktor is alive and he’s going to be alright. “No V, it’s not. You’re in a hospital.”

Viktor looks at him with glazed over eyes, the rusty gears in his head turning a centimeter a minute. “Huh?” Says the world renowned physicist.

Jayce scoots closer to the bed, “You had a surgery Vik. A lung transplant. It went really well and you’re gonna feel a lot better now. You’ll still have to be careful of course, but—,” Jayce swallows the lump in his throat, his eyes glistening, “You’re gonna be okay. Oh god, you’re gonna be okay!”

Jayce leans over and presses his forehead into Viktor’s, still clutching his bony hand like his life depended on it. And in a way it did. If he were a poet, he would come up with a thousand different metaphors likening Viktor to the sun, the moon, the stars, the gods. And they would all still fall tragically short to how much Viktor means to him.

Jayce is not a poet, he doesn’t have the words to tell him all that he feels, but he has him in his arms nonetheless. And that’s all that matters.

Great news everyone. There was a kitten wandering in the drive thru at work and my inner warrior cats kid tried to be a hero and capture him.

I have now suffered multiple puncture wounds and have to go to the emergency room.
